Real Madrid have completed the signing of midfielder Michael Essien on loan from Chelsea. The move reunites the Ghanaian star with former Chelsea and current Real boss Jose Mourinho, who signed him for the Blues from Olympique Lyonnais in 2005. Essien was linked with deadline day moves to both Arsenal and Stoke, but chose to move south to Real.
Essien was an integral part of Chelsea FC’s success in the Mourinho era, but injuries have restricted his playing time in the last couple of seasons and have seen him fall down the pecking order at the Bridge. Chelsea have also signed a number of midfielders that has dramatically increased competition for a starting place
