Barnes on trial at Birmingham

Former Derby midfielder Giles Barnes is training with Premier League side Birmingham City. The midfielder left Derby earlier this month after he agreed his exit by mutual consent. He was highly rated before injury took a toll on the 21 year-old. He has endured a nightmare 18 months with injuries and is hoping to resurrect his career at St Andrews.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is believed to be a big fan of Barnes and could offer the youngster a contract if he impresses in training. Barnes’ agent Colin Gordon has revealed that the midfielder is at Birmingham to help his fitness .

“It is a great opportunity for Giles to get back playing again,” Gordon told skysports.com.

“He is training at Birmingham to see how his fitness is. Alex has been great with Giles and Giles has enjoyed his time there so far as the mood in the camp is really good.”

Reports in Holland have also linked the former England under-21 star with a move to Eredivisie side FC Twente. However Gordon has claimed there is nothing in those reports.

“The link with FC Twente is nonsense and in any case they take their winter break this weekend,” he added.
