Whaley extends Rochdale stay as Newell gets the sack

Rochdale have secured the services of Norwich midfielder Simon Whaley for another month. The former Preston star has impressed at Spotland and manager Keith Hill was keen to extend his stay beyond his original loan deal which was suppose to expired after last weekend against Grimsby. However he has now signed till November 12th.

Whaley has made six appearances for Dale and scored against Hereford in their 4-1 victory. Whaley only moved to Norwich last summer from Preston but he doesn’t seem to be in Norwich manager Paul Lambert’s plans.

Meanwhile League Two rivals Grimsby have fired boss Mike Newell. The former Luton boss was only appointed just over a year ago and was expected to improve the clubs fortunes. However his reign didn’t go well and Grimsby find themselves second from bottom in League Two.

A club statement read: “Grimsby Town Football Club today announced that they have parted company with manager Mike Newell. Despite the intention for continued support beyond the recent poor results & disappointing performances the club has dismissed Mike Newell due to irretrievable breakdown.

“The directors believe they have done everything possible to back him during his period with the club but were left with no alternative but to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

Youth team boss Neil Woods has been appointed caretaker boss while the club look for a permanent boss.
