Sunderland part company with Djibril Cisse

Sunderland have decided not to make Djibril Cisse’s loan move from Marseille permanent. The Black Cats, who were one of the relegation candidates on the last day of the season, had loaned Cisse from Marseille in August last year. Cisse and Kenwyne Jones paired up well initially, but the former Liverpool hitman struggled to find the back of the net in the second half of the season.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn wished Cisse all the best of luck, and thanked him for his contribution to the club.

While many Sunderland fans would probably be delighted to see Cisse go, he will also be a hero for many Wearsiders after helping Sunderland to register their first win at home over bitter North East rivals Newcastle in 28 years. Cisse also scored in the 1-1 draw at St.James Park.

Cisse scored 11 times for Sunderland during the season, but was able to score just once in his last twelve appearances. Sunderland reportedly paid Marseille €2m for his season long loan.

Meanwhile Sunderland have also said that former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is not in their list of replacements for the departing Ricky Sbragia.
