O’Neill to offer Johnson City exit route

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill is said to be willing to offer Adam Johnson an escape route out of Manchester City. Young winger Johnson has been hailed as one the outstanding talents in English football but has been reduced to warming the bench at City and O’Neill is hopeful that the lure of regular football will play a role in getting him back to the North-East.

Johnson was a key player at Middlesbrough and a target for many Premier League clubs before signing for City. However his inability to nail down a regular place has seen him miss out on England’s Euro 2012 squad.

A stumbling block in any potential transfer would be Johnson’s wages but Sunderland are also reportedly willing to do a loan deal that will see City pay part of the wages, much like they did when they loaned Emmanuel Adebayor out to Tottenham.
