Michael Owen signs new contract, plunges Berbatov future into greater doubt

Michael Owen has signed a one year extension to his contract that will see him stay at Manchester United till the end of the 2011/2012 season. Owen’s current deal with United was due to expire this summer but the Red Devils decide to exercise the option to renew the 31 year old striker’s contract.

Owen has been primarily used as a substitute at United so far but was preferred to Premier League top scorer Dimitar Berbatov for a spot in the bench in the recently concluded Champions League final at Wembley. He also scored United’s last league goal of the 10/11 season against Blackpool, thus sending the Seasiders down to the Championship.

Sir Alex Ferguson praised Owen as a footballer and hoped that the striker would get more opportunities to appear in United colours in the forthcoming season.
