Manchester United target Rodwell and Adam

It’s succession planning time at Old Trafford these days. No, we’re not talking about Sir Alex’s successor, but the one who is most likely to take over Paul Scholes’ role. With age catching up with the former England midfielder, Sir Alex is looking to inject some new blood into his squad. He has earmarked Charlie Adam and Jack Rodwell as possible options to take over from Scholes at the end of the season.

Manchester United are expected to jump the queue and bid strongly for Blackpool captain Charlie Adam. A deadline day move to Tottenham fell through for Adam during the last transfer window and a lot of interest is expected to be shown in the Scottish international. Adam’s price may well depend on whether the Tangerines stay in the Barclay’s Premier League at the end of the season. Ian Holloway has reiterated in the past, that a bid in the range of £15 million would be needed to prize away Blackpool’s captain.

United have sounded out Everton about a possible bid for Jack Rodwell. The Everton midfielder has impressed everyone with his displays this season, and Sir Alex is no exception. David Moyes, though, won’t give up on Rodwell without a fight. Moyes is expected to ask for United striker Danny Welbeck and cash in return for Rodwell. Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, for whom Welbeck plays on loan at this moment, has also expressed his desire to keep sign Welbeck on a permanent deal. But Sir Alex has insisted that Welbeck would return and stay at Old Trafford after his loan spell.
