Liverpool sign Palace youngster

Liverpool have completed the signing of highly-rated Charlton midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for an initial fee of £1.7million which could rise depending on appearances and international appearances. The 18 year-old midfielder is highly-rated and was being chased by a number of the top English clubs.

Shelvey will move to Anfield on 10th May after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms. The youngster has already made over 40 appearances for the Addicks despite his tender years and is regarded as one of the countries brightest youngsters.

Liverpool Managing Director Christian Purslow told Liverpool’s official website: “Jonjo is an exciting young England international. His signing is part of our long-term strategic recruitment plan and we all look forward to welcoming him to Melwood.”

Meanwhile Charlton chairman Richard Murray revealed that the club didn’t want to sell Shelvey but felt that they couldn’t afford to turn the offer down.

Murray said: No club likes to lose such a talented prospect, but the overall package is one we couldn’t refuse, and one which was very attractive to Jonjo. It is with the greatest reluctance that we have accepted an offer for Jonjo from Liverpool.”Liverpool are going to develop him over the next few years to be a top player, and I can’t think of a better place for him to go to.”
