Italian midfielder Enzo Maresca has completed his move to Greek giants Olympiakos from Sevilla. Maresca has been with the Spanish club for four years but a fall out with coach Manolo Jimenez saw him spend most of his time on the substitutes’ bench. As a result, the 29-year old played only ten complete games for Sevilla last season.
Following lengthy negotiations, both clubs have agreed to a fee of about €1.2million (£1million) and the player has been offered a lucrative three year contract. Maresca, 29, joined Sevilla from Fiorentina in 2005 and helped them win two UEFA Cups and one Spanish King’s Cup.
I don’t want to remember the bad moments now. I want to remember all the people of Sevilla and the coach I had before [Juande Ramos] rather than all the other trivial things,” he said during a press conference.“I had several good moments, and the worst was no doubt when we lost our team-mate, Antonio Puerta. “Although a lot of people here will recall the first UEFA Cup we won, I remember the second one better because I scored some very important goals.” Maresca then went on to admit that had it not been for the problems with Jimenez, “the story would have been very different”.
Maresca becomes Olympiakos’ fifth signing of the summer. He follows Jaouad Zairi, Urko Pardo, Olof Mellberg and Matt Derbyshire into the club.
