Blues name Lampard as caretaker boss

Frank Lampard will have a second stint as manager at Chelsea after the Blues officially announced him as their caretaker boss till the end of the current 2022/23 season. The former midfielder was previously in charge at Stamford Bridge during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons before being replaced in January 2021 by Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea parted ways with Tuchel earlier this season and replaced him with Brighton boss Graham Potter, only to sack the latter a few days ago following a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa. Potter’s assistant Bruno Saltor was at the helm for their 0-0 midweek draw against Liverpool, and the Blues board have now decided to hand over the reins to Lampard till the end of the season.

Caretaker managers appointed late in the season have had great success in Europe with the Blues- Roberto di Matteo won the Champions League with them in 2012, as did Tuchel in 2021. Blues fans will be hoping that Lampard enjoys similar luck- they will face defending champions Real Madrid in the last eight of the competition later this month.

Lampard’s first game as Chelsea manager will be an away trip to Molineux to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend.
