Blades sign Fourtune but were turned by Shawky

Former Charlton defender Jonathan Fortune has signed for Sheffield United on a short-term deal. The 28 year-old was available on a free transfer after leaving the Addicks. Fortune has been training with Charlton for the last three months after seeing out his contract at the Valley. Fortune impressed enough in those three months for Blades boss Kevin Blackwell to offer him a three-month deal.

“We have not paid Jonathan a penny while he has been training with us and he has worked his socks off,” said Blackwell.

“When he first arrived, he was nowhere near the levels where he should be, he couldn’t turn or twist and there was no burst of speed.“Mohamed had the opportunity to go to Sheffield, but turned it down,” he said. The midfielder is currently out of the first team squad due to being deemed unfit to play. The Boro boss did admit however that if he regains full fitness then he would be in contention for a place in his squad.

“But he has shown a true professional’s attitude and we know he is getting close now.

“He is still only 28 and when he performs he is a Premier League or top Championship player.”

Meanwhile Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has revealed that Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Shawky turned down a move to the Blades. The 27 year-old has made no secret of his desire to leave the North East side but decided not to move to Bramall Lane.
