Portsmouth accept Tottenham bid for Crouch
July 26, 2009
Portsmouth boss Paul Hart has confirmed that his club have accepted a bid from Tottenham for Peter Crouch. The bid for the England striker is believed to be in the £10million region. Just a few days ago Spurs manager Harry Redknapp had said he wouldn’t be making a move for the gangly star, as he was ‘too expensive’.
However it seems he has now agreed on a lesser fee with Pompey, after the South Coast club originally demanded £12million. Sunderland had already agreed a £12million fee with Crouch, but the former Liverpool striker turned down the personal terms in favour of waiting for move closer to the South.
Portsmouth chief Hart told the Daily Mirror: “Obviously I’m disappointed to see Peter leave, but given the severe financial restraints in place here we had no choice but to accept an offer from Tottenham,”
“I think people need to realise that Pompey have been punching above their weight and could no longer sustain the level of spending that has gone on here over the last three years.”
Sunderland are in discussions with Tottenham over striker Darren Bent, the former Charlton ace is rated at £10million by Sunderland, Tottenham however rate the England international nearer the £15million mark. Talks are on-going between the two the clubs and the Mackems boss Steve Bruce is confident of a compromise being reached.

Bolton complete double swoop
July 25, 2009
Bolton have completed the double transfer of Hull defender Sam Ricketts and Aston Villa defender Zat Knight for undisclosed fees. The pair have signed three-year deals at the Reebok Stadium and manager Gary Megson is delighted to sign the duo.
The Bolton chief told their official website: “We are really pleased that we could complete the deals. Both players had other offers to consider.
“I am sure that they will fit in to the squad and we are going to make sure that we help them with their new challenge.
“Zat has plenty of Premier League experience and has played at the highest level with England, while Sam personally had a successful debut Premier League campaign with Hull.”
Knight joined Villa from Fulham for £3.5million in 2007 but has struggled to hold down a regular first team place at Villa Park, although during his time at Craven Cottage the giant centre back made enough of an impression to win an England call-up.
Welsh international full back Ricketts impressed last season in Hull’s first season in the Premier League and made 27 appearances for the Tigers. Bolton have already completed the transfers of Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis on a free transfer and West Brom full back Paul Robinson on a season-long loan.

Ibrahimovic Eto’o swap almost done
July 25, 2009
Barcelona have officially announced that Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will arrive for a medical at the Nou Camp tomorrow. If Ibra passes the medical, then his move is likely to be formally completed. The Inter Milan star has already agreed personal terms with the Blaugrana.
Barca will pay Inter around €48m, with Samuel Eto’o also moving to the San Siro. Inter coach Jose Mourinho was delighted with the deal, and said that “only a stupid coach would be unhappy with the transfer”. Mourinho further added that he considered Eto’o to be as good as Ibrahimovic, and had thought that Real, and not Barcelona, would come after his prized asset.
This is the second piece of business Barca and Inter have done this summer. The Spanish champions earlier brought Maxwell from the Nerazzuri. Belarus midfielder Aliaksandr Hleb has also moved to the San Siro as part of the deal that brought Maxwell to Spain.

Felipe Caicedo joins Sporting Lisbon on loan
July 23, 2009
After making headlines for signing a host of new players in the close season, City have finally let one go. Manchester City forward Felipe Caicedo has joined Potugese side Sporting Lisbon on a one year loan deal. Sporting will announce the deal once the Ecuadorian passes his medical.
Felipe Caicedo joined Manchester City for €7 million during Sven Goran Eriksson’s reign and never really was able to adapt to the Premier League. He made 27 appearances for City under Mark Hughes but could manage to score only five times. With the arrival of big name strikers at City of Manchester Stadium, Caicedo was pushed further down in the pecking order. With Sporting playing their Champions League qualifier next Wednesday, they would like him to train as soon as possible. And he may get a chance to test himself in the Champions League, something that he was never able to achieve at City.
“Sporting Clube de Portugal hereby announces that a pre-agreement has been reached with Manchester City Football Club for the loan of the player Felipe Caicedo for one season. The definitive agreement depends on the undertaking of medical tests,” the club statement read.

Tottenham win race for Blades pair
July 22, 2009
Sheffield United full backs Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker have completed their £8million switch to Tottenham. The pair had also been linked with Everton, but they have now chosen White Hart Lane ahead of Goodison Park.
19 year-old Walker will stay at United for another season and move to Tottenham next summer. Naughton played 40 games for the Yorkshire side last season as they made it to the Championship play-off final, only to be defeated 1-0 by Burnley. Naughton faces a tough fight on his hands to gain regular action at Tottenham with Alan Hutton and Vedran Corluka both already competing for the right back spot for next season.
Its also being reported that Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is interested in signing Manchester City starlet Nedum Onuoha. He again faces competition for the defender from Everton, but the Merseysider’s will be favourites as City manager Mark Hughes is hoping to use Onuoha as bait to sign Everton star Joleon Lescott.
The Toffee’s have already rejected a £15million bid from City for the former Wolves star, but the mega-rich club are likely to come back with a larger bid which could involve the England Under-21 ace moving to Merseyside in part-exchange.

Eriksson joins Notts County
July 21, 2009
Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has joined League Two outfit Notts County as director of football. He will join his long term ally Tord Grip as a “general adivsor to the club.” Eriksson’s remuneration would be based on success of Notts County on the pitch and Eriksson also becomes a shareholder in the club.
After managing England with moderate success from 2001-06, Eriksson took over the job as Manchester City boss. He was sacked after just one year into the job – even after finishing eighth. Then, he chose to take over as Mexico’s head coach – another job which yielded no positives. Eriksson was heavily linked with the job at Pompey but instead he chose to go to Notts County.
“Sven shares our vision, and to attract someone of his calibre is testament to the ambition that we all share for Notts County,” club chairman Peter Trembling said in a statement. “This is a great day for everyone associated with the club.”
In addition to Sven, Notts County have also completed the signing of Yeovil striker Luke Rodgers on a two-year contract. He impressed during their pre season tour to Austria where he scored four goals.
Manager Ian McParland said: “Luke came with us to Austria and certainly made an impression.”He trained superbly and we could not argue with his goals return from the two matches we played. Luke adds another dimension to our attacking options and I’m looking forward to working with him. I still want to bring in another striker and we’re working hard behind the scenes to make that happen.”
