United sign starlet but look set to miss out on midfield duo

March 8, 2010

Premier League champions Manchester United have completed the signing of Marnick Vermijl, according to his father. The 18 year-old Belgian impressed the United coaching staff during trials at United. His club Standard Liege will receive compensation in the region of £250,000 for the player’s services.

Vermijl has signed a three year contract with the champions and will move to Old Trafford this summer. The youngster is a wing back who can play on both sides of the pitch.

Vermijl’s dad told Het Laatste Nieuws: “They said he was the best right or left-back they had seen in years. Ferguson told me that Marnick in the following years would become a fixture in the Manchester United squad.”

Two of Manchester United biggest targets Franck Ribery and Angel Di Maria both look unlikely to move to Old Trafford. United were linked with a move for Frenchman Ribery in the summer as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

However Ribery has revealed that three clubs are interested in signing him. Those are Real Madrid, Barcelona and United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea. United now look likely to turn their attentions to other targets.

One of those other targets was believed to be Benfica winger Angel Di Maria. However the Argentine star has refused to talk about a move and is preferring to concentrate on his current side. If Di Maria does become available United will be competing with AC Milan, Chelsea and Barcelona for the 22 year-olds signature.

West Brom sign Wigan midfielder

February 22, 2010

Championship high-fliers West Brom have signed Wigan midfielder Ben Watson on loan until the end of the season. Watson hasn’t featured much for Wigan under boss Roberto Matinez this season and has only took part in cup games.

The midfielder has now decided to move on to gain regular first team football. Watson also spent a spell on-loan at fellow Championship side Queens Park Rangers earlier in the season. It proved relatively successful as he made 16 appearances and scored twice.

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo is delighted to have signed the 24 year-old. He told the clubs official website: “Having lost Gonzalo Jara for the remainder of the season to injury, we have been looking to strengthen the central midfield area and we are very pleased that Ben has joined us,”

“Ben is very good technically and is a competitive player who knows the Championship very well. He has played many times at this level and knows what is required, which should help him to hit the ground running.”

Watson will be unavailable for West Brom’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Reading on Wednesday but he should be in the Baggies squad for the visit of Derby on Saturday. West Brom are also believed to be interested in signing Watson’s Wigan teammate Jason Koumas. However the Baggies could sign the Welsh international in the summer.

Pompey snap up Tosic

February 14, 2010

Premier League crisis club Portsmouth have signed Serbian international defender Dusko Tosic on a free transfer. Portsmouth have been allowed to strengthen their squad despite the clubs recent financial woes. The club could have folded on Wednesday but a hearing on an unpaid tax bill has been delayed till next week.

Tosic was with German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen before his contract was cancelled earlier this month. Pompey boss Avram Grant has been looking to bolster his squad as they attempt to escape the Premier League relegation zone.

Grant told Sky Sports News: “He’s not under contract so we could sign him (outside the transfer window),”

“He played for Werder Bremen and I think he could help us because we don’t have enough defenders, and he can at full-back and in the middle.”

The defender could make his debut against Stoke City at Fratton Park next weekend. Tosic joins fellow defender Ricardo Rocha in joining the club outside the transfer window due to him being a free agent. He has won nine caps for his country and has played in France in Ligue One with Sochaux as well as the Bundesliga.

Coventry sign young hammer

February 11, 2010

Coventry have signed young West Ham striker Freddie Sears on loan until the end of the season. The 20 year-old is highly rated at Upton Park and is expected to make a big impact in the future for West Ham. Sears is also a current England under-21 international.

Coventry needed to strengthen their attack after losing striker Leon Best to Newcastle on transfer deadline day. Sears had a loan spell in the Championship with Crystal Palace earlier in the season. However in 19 appearances the youngster didn’t score a goal.

He returned to West Ham in January and made two appearances for the Hammers as a substitute. With West Ham strengthening their strike-force in the January transfer window Sears was allowed to move away to gain regular first team football and experience.

Sears scored on his his West Ham debut at 18. He took just 5 minutes and 16 seconds for him to find the target. However he has failed to find the net again since that early strike. He will be hoping to break that duck at the Ricoh Arena.

The youngster will be in Coventry’s squad for their home game on Saturday against Queens Park Rangers. Sears had also been linked with a move to fellow Championship side Scunthorpe. However the club denied any interest in the player.

Nonda looking for English return

February 10, 2010

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Shabani Nonda has revealed that he hopes to move back to England. The Congolese striker was released by Turkish giants Galatasaray last month after falling out of favour at the club. Numerous sides are believed to be interested in signing the striker but his preferred destination is England.

The 32 year-old striker is well travelled, having played for Italian side Roma, French side Rennes and Swiss side FC Zurich. He has scored over 150 club goals in his career, as well as scoring over 30 goals for his nation.

Nonda had a decent spell with Rovers scoring seven goals in 26 games after moving to the club on-loan for six months. And he enjoyed his stay in England. Blackburn didn’t decided to sign him on a permanent basis, so he moved to Galatasaray.

Cash-strapped Portsmouth have shown an interest in the former Monaco hotshot and his agent John Dario has admitted Nonda would relish a return to the Premier League. He told skysports.com: “Shabani is free to go anywhere he likes after he left Galatasaray,”

“I have heard of interest from English teams, but I have not spoken to any clubs as yet. Shabani was very happy at Blackburn and he would come back to England with pleasure.”

February 9, 2010

Paraguayan international midfielder Christian Riveros’ agent has claimed that Premier League sides Sunderland and Wigan are interested in signing his client. The 27 year-old midfielder currently plays his football in the Mexican top flight with Cruz Azul.

Riveros’ agent Jose Gonzalez has even admitted that Wigan and Sunderland have both held talks with the player over a possible move. The Paraguayan’s contract ends with Cruz Azul later this year. He would then be available on a free transfer.

Riveros has good experience at the top level of football, having represented his country at the last World Cup and also played in Paraguay’s Copa America campaign in 2007. Riveros has told his agent he wishes to ply his trade in either Spain or England at the end of his Cruz Azul contract.

Gonzalez told Mediotiempo: “We were waiting for Cruz Azul to improve their proposal for renewing the contract with Christian but as they didn’t do it we are already having negotiations with Sunderland and Wigan,”

“We are analysing his departure to European football. For the moment we aren’t anywhere near what I expected for Christian. I have already received a proposal but it’s not satisfying.

“Christian doesn’t want to leave towards to a league in a random way, his priority is England and Spain. For the moment we have proposals from Sunderland and Wigan.”

Championship high-fliers West Brom have signed young West Ham striker Frank Nouble on an initial  months loan deal. The deal will go through on Tuesday when the emergency transfer window reopens.

Chamakh wants Arsenal move

February 7, 2010

Moroccan striker Marouane Chamakh has revealed that he would like to ply his trade in the Premier League next season. He also stated Arsenal is his preferred destination. The 26 year-old is highly rated but is available on a free transfer this summer when his contract with French champions Bordeaux expires.

The striker has helped inspire Bordeaux to the French league title last season. They look like claiming their second successive title currently being six points clear at the top of Ligue One. Chamakh is in demand and it’s believed that Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton have all been in touch with his agent over a summer move.

European giants Inter Milan, Juventus and Sevilla have also made enquiries out the prolific striker. However it appears Chamakh has set his heart on a move to the Emirates. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a big admirer and tried to sign the Moroccan last summer. He couldn’t agree terms with Bordeaux, so the striker stayed in France.

He told media: “My future? Well, I hold all the cards, I have no reason to be under pressure but everyday passing by, I am a little less a Bordeaux player,”

“My choice is to join Premier League and if I could choose, I will go to Arsenal. Bordeaux has brought me so much. I will soon clearly state things so the club can prepare to find my replacement peacefully.”

City interested in signing Greek ace

February 6, 2010

Manchester City are looking at signing Greek international Vasilis Torosidis. The Olympiakos defender could make a move to Eastlands next summer according to his agent. The 24 year-old has been linked with Liverpool, Sunderland and Blackburn.

Sunderland made an inquiry about Torosidis but decided to pull out when they discovered Olympiakos’ asking price. However City won’t be deterred by his valuation of £6million.

Torosidis’ agent has revealed the full-back would welcome a move to the Premier League. And City were scouting Torosidis before Mancini arrived at the club. The former Inter boss didn’t make a move for the Greek ace in January because he didn’t know enough about him.

Kazianis told skysports: “The possibilities for Vasilis to play football in England for a Premier League club are good because I have had contact in the last 20 days with Manchester City. City called us and asked a few things about Torosidis. They showed real interest and they told us that they will keep their eye on Vasilis during the World Cup.

“They know him very well but since Roberto Mancini didn’t know the player very well, they decided not to do anything in January. They told us that they will keep watching him until the World Cup and we will speak again in the summer”
