Manchester City release experienced trio

June 8, 2010

Roberto Mancini began his summer clearout at Eastlands by deciding not to offer contracts to three experienced players. All of Martin Petrov, Benjani and Sylviniho were asked to find new employers as they did not fit into Mancini’s plans for the Manchester club.

Petrov was signed by Sven Goran Eriksson in 2007 and was by far the most successful of the above mentioned players. He appeared 72 times for City scoring 12 goals including the winner against Barcelona in the Joan Gamper trophy at the start of last season. But Petrov’s inability to track back and emergence of Adam Johnson as a better alternative on the wings sealed his fate. The Bulgarian’s release is set to spark a massive war for his signature. Villa are heading the chasing pack with Everton, Spurs, Stoke, West Ham and Bolton also showing interest.

31-year-old Benjani was a panic purchase by Eriksson. He never really settled at City. He scored seven times in 21 appearances and spent the latter half of last season on loan at Sunderland. Brazilian veteran Sylvinho provided experience at the left back slot, but it was always known that his contract would not be extended beyond the current season.

Fabio Aurelio to leave Liverpool

May 25, 2010

image11.jpgLiverpool’s Brazilian left back Fabio Aurelio is set to quit the club after a four year spell. The 30-year old became the first Brazilian to sign for the Merseyside club when he joined in 2006 on a free transfer from Valencia. Aurelio’s career in England has been blighted by injuries prompting Rafa Benitez to offer him a pay-as-you-play deal which was rejected by Aurelio.

In his four years at the club, the former Sao Paolo man made just 71 appearances and scored thrice. Aurelio missed the major part of the 2009-10 season through injury. He missed the start of the season with a freak knee problem and his season ended prematurely in February when he was sidelined with a thigh injury.

The emergence of Emiliano Insua as the first choice left back had also compounded Aurelio’s worries. Fabio was no longer sure of a spot in the starting eleven.

In other news, Liverpool have decided against signing Rangers defender Danny Wilson when they found out that he would not meet the Premier League’s home-grown quota. A deal in the region of about £2million had been agreed for the 18-year old but negotiations fizzled out when it was understood that ‘home grown’ status was only to be given to players from England and Wales.
