Atletico agree £35m transfer fee with Porto for Falcao

August 19, 2011

Atletico Madrid have announced that they have struck a deal with FC Porto for the transfer of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao. Los Colchoneros will pay Porto around £35m ( 40 million euros) for Falcao’s services. The fee could however rise to £40m ( 45m euros) over the years in add-ons. The Colombian is one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, averaging nearly a goal a game with Porto, and is expected to fill the hole left by Sergio Aguero’s £38m move to Manchester City.

Falcao was very strongly linked with a switch to Chelsea following former Porto boss Andre Villas-Boas’ appointment at Stamford Bridge, but the transfer did not materialise, and Atletico, flush with funds following Aguero’s sale, pounced for the prolific striker.

Gers complete double American swoop

August 18, 2011

Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers have completed the double signing of Alejandro Bedoya and Carlos Bocanegra from Orebro and St.Etienne respectively. The duo take the number of American players at Ibrox Park to three, joining midfielder Maurice Edu in Glasgow.

Bedoya had originally signed a pre contract agreement to join Rangers in January after the completion of the Swedish Allsvenskan league, but Rangers managed to broker a deal with Orebro for the 24 year old’s immediate transfer by paying a reported $500,000 fee.

Versatile defender Bocanegra, who can play at both left back and centre half, has joined on a three year contract for an undisclosed fee ( reported to be around $660,000). He captained the United States at the 2010 World Cup and has already collected more than 90 caps for the national team.

Hearts accept Gers bid for Wallace

July 21, 2011

Scottish Premier League outfit Heart of Midlothian have accepted a bid from rivals Glasgow Rangers for defender Lee Wallace. The Gers had two previous bids, reportedly around £300,000 and £1m rejected for Wallace, but their third offer of £1.5m forced Hearts’ hand.

Left back Wallace is now expected to discuss personal terms with Rangers. He is a product of Hearts’ youth set up and has made over 150 appearances for the Tynecastle outfit. The 23 year old has also gone on to win five caps for the Scottish national team.

Wallace is in the last year of his contract with Hearts and although club officials had expressed their desire to tie him down to a new deal, manager Jim Jefferies had always admitted that a significant money offer would force the club to accept a bid.

Real Madrid complete Coentrao signing

July 6, 2011

Real Madrid have completed the signing of left back Fabio Coentrao from Benfica. The Portuguese defender moves to Real for £27m and has signed a six year deal with Los Merengues. The £27m fee (30 million euros) makes Coentrao the second most expensive defender in the world after Dani Alves, who plies his trade for Real’s arch rivals Barcelona.

Coentrao becomes Real’s fifth major summer acquisition after the Bundesliga pair of Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop, Raphael Varane and Jose Callejon. He is expected to compete with Brazilian Marcelo for a starting spot in Jose Mourinho’s lineup.

Coentrao is rated as one of Portugal’s best full backs and at 23, is counted as one of their stars for the future. He also had a productive World Cup 2010, where Portugal reached the Round of 16 before losing to Spain.

June 30, 2011

Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic have announced the signing of Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama, subject to the player receiving his work permit and passing a medical. The Hoops had reached an agreement with Belgian outfit Germinal Beerschot for Wanyama’s transfer earlier this year and the player, the brother of Inter’s McDonald Mariga, has also agreed personal terms with the Glasgow outfit.

The transfer fee for Wanyama was not announced, but sources have it to be somewhere in the £900,000 range. Bitter rivals Rangers were also interested in securing Wanyama’s services and so were English Premier League side Aston Villa, but the Hoops stole a march over both the clubs and are now in a prime position to sign Wanyama, who made his international debut for the Kenyan national team at the tender age of 15.

Wanyama’s signing has to be approved by a panel as Kenya are not in the top 70 ranked FIFA nations in the world.

The Gers were interested in securing his services and it was thought that the possibility of playing Champions League football would swing the deal in their favour, but it has now fallen through after the forward decided to move to Spain instead.

Hemed was the top scorer in the Israeli Premier League last season and has already been capped by Israel at senior level. He made his debut against Latvia earlier this month.
