Former Rangers striker Boyd agrees to MLS switch

January 31, 2012

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has agreed to join MLS outfit Portland Timbers. Boyd was a free agent after being released by Turkish outfit Eskisehirspor in December and despite interest from a number of SPL and Championship clubs, opted for a switch to the lucrative MLS.

Timbers are coached by former Scotland striker John Spencer and Boyd is expected to earn something in the region of £1.4m a year. He has agreed a three year deal with the West Coast outfit and will join them in the States very soon.

Houston Dynamo were also interested in Boyd but he opted for Portland after holding talks with Spencer regarding his role at the MLS club.

Rangers in move for Pawel Brozek

January 28, 2012

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has revealed that he is interested in securing the services of Polish striker Pawel Brozek. Brozek is currently contracted to Turkish giants Trabzonspor but McCoist is keen to wrap up a deal before the end of the current transfer window, preferably on loan.

McCoist has also revealed that he sees Brozek as a partner for Croatian hitman Nikica Jelavic, rather than a replacement for him.

Brozek is targetting some regular football before Poland host the European championships and McCoist is hoping that the need for first team action could help smoothen the Pole’s move to Ibrox Park.

Brozek joined Trabzonspor last year after nearly a decade with Wisla Krakow.

Rangers hand lanky Nigerian trial

January 27, 2012

Scottish giants Rangers have handed VVV Venlo striker Michael Uchebo a trial with a view to a permanent transfer. The lanky Nigerian wants a move away from the Netherlands, where he currently plays with VVV, and is training with Rangers with a view to completing a switch north to Scotland.

Uchebo also had a trial with Stoke City recently but the move did not go through. Rangers are expected to pay Venlo a fee of around £1-1.5m for the striker.

VVV has also revealed that there is interest from Russia for Uchebo’s services. A move eastwards may be the only option left for the Nigerian U-20 international if he doesn’t receive a work permit for his transfer to the SPL.

Hoops to sign Polish defender

January 19, 2012

Polish defender Jaroslaw Fojut is set to join Glasgow Celtic, the Hoops have announced. Fojut has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Hoops and will move to Celtic at the beginning of the 2012/13 season once his contract with Slask Wroclaw expires at the end of the current season. Slask competed against Celtic’s domestic rivals Dundee United in the Europa League earlier this season.

Fojut is not new to the United Kingdom, having played for Bolton Wanderers and Luton Town before returning to his native Poland by signing for Slask Wroclaw in 2009.

Fojut is a central defender who has played for Poland at youth levels.

Gers to give trial to Estonian defender

January 13, 2012

Rangers are set to give a trial to Estonian defender Enar Jaager. The 27 year old right back, who can also play as a centre half, is currently a free agent after seeing out his contract at Norwegian outfit Aalesunds and will be undergoing a trial at Ibrox Park next week.

Jaager is an extremely experienced player, having featured more than 80 times for the Estonian national team, and counts Ascoli and Torpedo Moscow among his former clubs.

Apart from Jaager, Rangers are also said to be keen on Swedish midfielder Mervan Celik, who is also a free agent, and also want to land teenage forward Benik Afobe on loan from Premier League giants Arsenal.

Gers confirm interest in Javi Guerra

January 11, 2012

Rangers gaffer Ally McCoist has confirmed his interest in Real Valladolid forward Javi Guerra. McCoist told the Daily Record that the Gers were weighing up an offer for the £2m rated Guerra, who currently plies his trade in the Spanish second division.

The Gers were recently linked with a move for another Spanish hitman, Francisco Sandaza, who plays for St.Johnstone. However nothing concrete in that regard has materialised yet due to the financial uncertainty at Ibrox Park.

Guerra has an impressive strike rate for Valladolid, netting 34 times in 55 appearances for them, and the Segunda Division outfit have impressed upon Rangers the need for a “solid” offer should they want to take the club’s prize asset up north to Glasgow.

A lot of Rangers’ chances of signing Guerra are said to be hinging on the potential sale of Nikica Jelavic before the window closes.

Bhoys target Salihi seeks Rapid exit

January 10, 2012

Celtic striker Hamdi Salihi seems to have paved his way for a move to Parkhead after admitting that a move to Scotland would be good for his career. Salihi is out of contract in the summer and could be available for as little as £500,000 if Rapid opt to cut short their losses in the current window instead of losing him of nothing next season.

Rapid have however indicated that Celtic have not made their interest in Salihi official yet. Salihi first caught the eye of Celtic scouts when he netted for Rapid against the Bhoys in the Europa League a couple of seasons ago. In that game Salihi was paired with Nikica Jelavic, who now plies his trade for Celtic’s arch rivals Rangers.

Saints boss claims Rangers interest in Sandaza

January 8, 2012

St.Johnstone boss Steve Lomas has revealed that Scottish giants Rangers are interested in the services of the club’s Spanish striker Francisco Sandaza. Sandaza, who is already into double digits for Saints this season, is out of contract in the summer and Rangers are keen to get him to sign on the dotted line.

Rangers are looking for striking reinforcements, with Nikica Jelavic being strongly linked with a move away from Ibrox and Steven Naismith and Kyle Lafferty injured, but may not be able to land Sandaza till the summer as St.Johnstone have currently slapped a £300,000 price on their star asset.

Sandaza joined Saints from Brighton and Hove Albion last year. He has also played for Dundee United in the SPL.

Juventus confirm Borriello loan signing

January 4, 2012

Serie A giants Juventus have officially confirmed the loan signing of striker Marco Borriello from AS Roma. Borriello has linked up with the Turin giants till the end of the season and Juve also have the option to make the deal permanent by paying Roma eight million euros.

Originally a Milan product, Borriello is a well travelled footballer in Italy, having plied his trade for Triestina, Treviso, Empoli, Reggina, Sampdoria and Genoa apart from his current club.

Borriello has made only seven appearances for Roma this season, with Luis Enrique preferring Pablo Osvaldo to the injury prone forward at the Olimpico.

Borriello has been capped by Italy at senior level and a good impression at Juve may help him secure a spot in the Azzurri squad for Euro 2012.

Atletico agree £35m transfer fee with Porto for Falcao

August 19, 2011

Atletico Madrid have announced that they have struck a deal with FC Porto for the transfer of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao. Los Colchoneros will pay Porto around £35m ( 40 million euros) for Falcao’s services. The fee could however rise to £40m ( 45m euros) over the years in add-ons. The Colombian is one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, averaging nearly a goal a game with Porto, and is expected to fill the hole left by Sergio Aguero’s £38m move to Manchester City.

Falcao was very strongly linked with a switch to Chelsea following former Porto boss Andre Villas-Boas’ appointment at Stamford Bridge, but the transfer did not materialise, and Atletico, flush with funds following Aguero’s sale, pounced for the prolific striker.
