Hammers sign John

January 14, 2012

West Ham have become the latest English club to take a MLS player on loan after the London club took George John on loan from Dallas. John, 24, has moved to Upton Park, with the Hammers having the option to make the two month loan deal permanent when it expires in March.

John was close to a move to Blackburn Rovers last summer, but the deal fell through at the end.

John is yet to make a senior international appearance but is eligible to play for both the United States and Greece.

John follows in the footsteps of Landon Donovan, Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane, all of whom have joined Premier League clubs during the MLS off season.

Reading snap up Irish striker

January 12, 2012

Reading have announced that they have completed the signing of striker Karl Sheppard on a free transfer. The 20 year old joins the Royals from Shamrock Rovers and has penned a two and a half year deal at the Madjeski Stadium.

Sheppard was an Everton trainee but failed to progress at the Merseyside club and chose to return to Ireland to further his career. Prior to joining Shamrock, whom he represented with distinction in this season’s Europa League, he was with Galway United.

Reading were not the only Championship club interested in Sheppard, with Blackpool, Cardiff and Peterborough United also reportedly interested in securing his signature.

Sheppard has been capped by the Republic at U-21 level and also appeared for the League of Ireland XI when they faced Manchester City in a friendly a few months ago.

Tykes complete Dagnall signing

January 7, 2012

Barnsley have completed the signing of striker Chris Dagnall from Scunthorpe United. Dagnall, 25, has been signed for an undisclosed transfer fee and has put pen to paper a two and half year contract at Oakwell.

Dagnall’s arrival is a welcome boost to Barnsley boss Keith Hill, who has been actively looking for striking reinforcements.

Dagnall joined Scunthorpe in June 2010 but was unable to replicate his goal scoring form from previous clubs at Glanford Park.

The 25 year old is Cup tied having played in the competition earlier for Iron, but Hill has dismissed concerns about that problem, saying that his primary aim is to ensure that Barnsley preserve their Championship status for the 2012-2013 season.

Town target out of favour Magpies star

January 3, 2012

Ipswich Town are reportedly in contention to sign former Manchester United star Alan Smith. The midfielder, who currently plies his trade for Newcastle United, has made only two appearances for the Tyneside outfit this season and was spotted having a look at Ipswich’s training facilities recently.

Smith may consider asking Newcastle boss Alan Pardew to cancel his contract by mutual consent if he is interested in linking up with former team-mate Lee Bowyer at Portman Road.

Smith has failed to net in a league game for the Magpies since his switch from Manchester United in 2007. He has been capped 19 times by England but has been hampered by injuries in the recent past.
