Leeds’ Gradel completes France switch

August 31, 2011

Ivorian forward Max Gradel has left Leeds United for French outfit As Saint Etienne. The 23 year old, whose contract with the Whites was expiring at the end of the season, has moved for an undisclosed fee. Gradel, Leeds Player of the Season, has put pen to paper a four year contract with ASSE.

There was plenty of interest in Gradel from English clubs, but Leeds chose not to sell the versatile striker to a rival outfit. Sochaux were also interested but they could not agree a fee with Leeds.

Gradel scored 25 goals in 81 appearances for Leeds and quickly established himself as a key member of the first XI following his switch from Leicester City.

Joe Cole joins Lille on loan

August 31, 2011

Liverpool winger Joe Cole has completed his switch to the French Ligue 1 by signing for Lille OSC on a season long loan. Cole’s transfer to the reigning French champions comes on the heels of Christian Poulsen’s decision to sign for Evian TG.

Cole was regarded as a possible transfer of the season when he arrived at Liverpool on a free transfer from Chelsea but never quite managed to establish himself and was resigned to the occasional Cup appearance. He was linked with a move to several other clubs, with Aston Villa, Spurs and QPR reportedly interest, but Lille’s ability to offer Champions League football ahead of next summer’s European Championships helped them clinch his signature.

Dane Poulsen leaves Liverpool for Ligue 1 newboys

August 31, 2011

Christian Poulsen has left Liverpool to join Ligue 1 new boys Evian TG. The midfielder was granted permission to talk to Evian by Liverpool yesterday after the two clubs agreed a reported 4.5m pound fee and has agreed personal terms with the club. Poulsen will be officially presented to the French press as an Evian player later this afternoon.

Poulsen had an unhappy stint at Anfield after joining from Juventus and only made a handful of appearances for the club. The arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam pushed him further down the pecking order and he realised he had to leave the club in order to guarantee regular football ahead of next year’s European Championships.

Harry Redknapp- Modric not leaving Spurs this summer

August 31, 2011

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has said that he is a million per cent sure that Luka Modric will not be leaving the club on transfer deadline day. Chelsea have been long time admirers of the midfielder, who also openly expressed his desire to leave, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has refused to grant the move and the Croatian seems certain to stay at White Hart Lane.

Reports in Croatia also quoted Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic as saying that Modric had told him he would be staying put at the Lane.

Tottenham have had a disappointing start to the season, suffering losses to both Manchester United and Manchester City.

Liverpool complete Coates signing

August 31, 2011

Liverpool have completed the signing of Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates from Nacional. The transfer fee for the youngster was not announced, but is reported be around £7m. Coates, the 2011 Copa America young player of the tournament, chose Liverpool over Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Dnipro on the advice of compatriot Luis Suarez, who plies his trade at Anfield.

The 20 year old Coates is being hailed as a long term successor to Jamie Carragher at Anfield. The fee is a record one for a Nacional player, nearly double of what Ajax paid to take Nicolas Lodeiro to Amsterdam. Coates was last season’s Uruguayan Championship Player of the Year and also won the award for best defender.

Van Bommel reveals rejected City bid

August 30, 2011

Holland midfielder Mark Van Bommel has revealed that Manchester City made a bid for his services which was rejected by his current club AC Milan. City manager Roberto Mancini was keen to add more teeth to his midfield despite already possessing one of the best lineups in the world and viewed Van Bommel as the perfect foil to Nigel de Jong because of the duo’s familiarity with each other in the Holland national team setup.

Mancini, who has already signed Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, Stefan Savic and Sergio Aguero this summer, is said to be worried regarding the unavailability of Yaya Toure in January due to the African Cup of Nations, a busy period for Premier League clubs.

Spurs and Villa weigh up shock Hargreaves move

August 30, 2011

Both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are interested in offering short term deals to out of contract midfielder Owen Hargreaves as the end of the transfer window approaches.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp wishes to bolster his midfield by the end of this summer window but has been unable to sign any one so far. The deal for Lassana Diarra seems to have fallen through because of the former’s wage demands while Spurs are still haggling with West Ham on a transfer fee for Scott Parker.

Hargreaves has also been approached by West Bromwich Albion and is expected to make a decision soon. The former Bayern Munich star has declared himself fit and capable of playing 40 games a season after seeing his time at Man Utd wrecked by injury problems.
