Manchester United target Rodwell and Adam

March 28, 2011

It’s succession planning time at Old Trafford these days. No, we’re not talking about Sir Alex’s successor, but the one who is most likely to take over Paul Scholes’ role. With age catching up with the former England midfielder, Sir Alex is looking to inject some new blood into his squad. He has earmarked Charlie Adam and Jack Rodwell as possible options to take over from Scholes at the end of the season.

Manchester United are expected to jump the queue and bid strongly for Blackpool captain Charlie Adam. A deadline day move to Tottenham fell through for Adam during the last transfer window and a lot of interest is expected to be shown in the Scottish international. Adam’s price may well depend on whether the Tangerines stay in the Barclay’s Premier League at the end of the season. Ian Holloway has reiterated in the past, that a bid in the range of £15 million would be needed to prize away Blackpool’s captain.

United have sounded out Everton about a possible bid for Jack Rodwell. The Everton midfielder has impressed everyone with his displays this season, and Sir Alex is no exception. David Moyes, though, won’t give up on Rodwell without a fight. Moyes is expected to ask for United striker Danny Welbeck and cash in return for Rodwell. Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, for whom Welbeck plays on loan at this moment, has also expressed his desire to keep sign Welbeck on a permanent deal. But Sir Alex has insisted that Welbeck would return and stay at Old Trafford after his loan spell.

Blackburn confirm van Nistelrooy interest

March 28, 2011

Blackburn boss Steve Kean is planning an audacious bid to bring former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to Ewood Park in the summer. The move is seen by many as part of a larger plan to attract Europe’s biggest talent to Ewood Park following the takeover of the club by Indian group Venkateshwara Hatcheries or Venky’s.

van Nistelrooy, who will turn 35 in July this year will be a free agent in the summer, if Hamburg do not offer him a new deal. He has spent a lot of time on the sidelines this season, but has managed to score a goal every three games for his current club. van Nistelrooy rejected an offer from Blackburn couple of seasons ago when he chose to move to Germany from Real Madrid.

‘Yes, I can confirm we are interested,’ Steve Kean told the ESPN soccernet. But the move would depend on whether Blackburn can avoid relegation and stay in the top flight. Blackburn’s striking options have not worked out well. Mame Diouf is expected to return back to United after his season long loan comes to an end. Blackburn are also unlikely to make Roque Santa Cruz’s loan move permanent. El Hadji Diouf is on loan at Rangers. Jason Roberts, thus, would be the only experienced striker at the club.

Whether Nistelrooy would accept a move to England or continue to play in Germany, is a question that would only be answered when the transfer window opens!

Alves, Kuyt sign new deals

March 23, 2011

Most often than not, we report on players moving from one club to another, on a permanent transfer or on loan. But today, we’ll take a look at some players who have resisted the temptation of moving to teams with a lucrative salary and instead extended their contract with their current club.

Dani Alves put to bed all speculation about him joining Manchester City as he signed a new three year deal with Barcelona. The new deal will see the Brazil full-back stay with the Catalan giants till 2015. Alves signed for Barcelona in a 29.5million euro deal in 2008 and has since made 88 appearances for Barcelona scoring ten goals. Manchester City were very eager to add him to their roster, after having already signed Yaya Toure and Guy Assulin from them.

Another player to have pledged allegiance to his current club is Dirk Kuyt. The 30-year old Dutchman has signed an extension to his current deal at Anfield, which ties him down to the club till 2014.  Kuyt had two years left on his current deal, but given his importance to Dalglish’s squad, he has been rewarded with a new three year contract.

Kuyt could have left the club last summer when Inter Milan came in with a strong bid for the versatile forward. But Kuyt resisted the temptation and has high hopes for the Merseysiders. ‘Liverpool is a club that should be playing for trophies and I guarantee that will happen soon,’ said Kuyt.

Manchester City eye Hennessey

March 22, 2011

The world’s a small place, they say and no wonder Wayne Hennessey would agree. The former Manchester City trainee who was released by the club in favour of Kasper Schmeichel is attracting interest from City scouts. City want Hennessey to provide competition to their current number one  - Joe Hart.

Roberto Mancini chose Joe Hart as City’s number one over the experienced Shay Given at the start of the season. The Republic of Ireland international had not made the switch to City from Newcastle to warm the bench, and as a result, Given is most likely to quit the club in the summer. The 23-year old Hennessey provides a long-term goalkeeping option for City and the coaches at Eastlands want the two best young goalkeeping talents in Britain at the City of Manchester Stadium. Hennessey has been the first choice custodian for Wolves since 2006 and has made over 100 appearances. He has 29 senior international appearances for Wales as well, at such a tender age.

Hennessey has just signed a contract which will keep him at Molineux till 2015. But he might be tempted to make the switch to the Premier League if Wolves get relegated at the end of the season.

Marveux close to Anfield switch

March 14, 2011

Stade Rennes’ attacking midfielder Sylvain Marveux is very close to agreeing a deal with Liverpool, if reports in England are to be believed.  The 24-year old French U-21 international’s contract with Rennes ends at the end of the season, and he is expected to join Liverpool for free in the summer. Marveux was being monitored by a lot of clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea, but he set his sights on a Liverpool move after being present as a guest at Anfield during the Reds’ 0-1 defeat at the hands of Wolves in December.

Marveux is quite a versatile player and can play wide on the left or centrally in a more advanced role behind the strikers. In his 102 appearances for Rennes, he has scored 20 times. But 12 of his 20 goals have come last season where he turned on a new leaf as an attacker.

Marveux is currently sidelined due to a groin injury and it seems unlikely that he’d be fit enough to play for Rennes before his move to Anfield.

Arsenal look for a backup keeper

March 14, 2011

Arsenal are looking to sign a goalkeeper on a short-term loan deal. Manuel Almunia is the only fit keeper at the Emirates Stadium. Wojciech Szczesny dislocated his finger in Arsenal’s defeat at the hands of Barcelona. It is expected that the Polish keeper will be out of action for six weeks. He joins Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone on the sidelines. Fabianski has been ruled out for the whole season due to shoulder surgery while Mannone suffered a thigh injury while on loan at Hull City. The injury crisis has left Wenger with two teenage goalkeepers – James Shea and Damian Martinez as backup for Almunia.

Reports have linked former Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann to fill in as the backup goalkeeper. The 41-year old German is in London to work on his coaching badges and was tight-lipped on the possibility of a short-term deal. “I am in London and so far have heard nothing of such plans, but you never know,” Lehmann told the German press.

Arsenal are also believed to be tracking Real Madrid’s Pablo Sarabia. Real Madrid have come to know of Arsenal’s interest in the teenager and have opened talks with him about a new deal. Francis Cagigao, Arsenal’s top scout in the Iberia region has recommended Sarabia to his bosses in London. Earlier this year, Arsenal also struck a deal with Barcelona youngster Jon Toral regarding a move to Emirates Stadium in the summer.

Arsenal’s left back conundrum

March 7, 2011

Nobody really knows who Arsenal’s first choice left-back will be at the start of next season. Arsenal’s current left-back Gael Clichy has fifteen months left on his current contract and negotiations regarding a new deal at the Emirates Stadium are heading nowhere. Clichy has supposedly walked out of the negotiations after being unhappy at the basic wage being offered.

Clichy’s contract ends after the 2011-12 season, and he has admirers all over the continent. Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are keen on the French star. North London rivals Tottenham are also willing to offer him a huge pay-rise to move to White Hart Lane. Liverpool are currently using Glen Johnson as a makeshift left back, and could well do with his services.

If Clichy fails to agree to a new deal by the end of this season, Arsenal are expected to cash in on him rather than allowing him to leave on a free twelve months down the line. Currently, Kieran Gibbs is the back-up full back at Arsenal. The 21-year old England international could well slot into Clichy’s position but his lack of experience could well count against him.

Given this scenario, Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Celtic’s Honduran left-back Emilio Izaguirre. Arsene Wenger may have move early in order to sign Izaguirre as Manchester United and Liverpool have also been closely tracking his progress.

Chelsea planning summer clear out?

March 7, 2011

If reports in England are to be believed, Carlo Ancelotti is planning a major clear-out at Chelsea in the summer, as he looks to rebuild him Chelsea team from scratch and reduce the average age of the squad. After the capture of David Luiz and Fernando Torres in the summer, the Italian manager has set his sights on some of the top young players in Europe.

But there’s not going to one-way traffic, as such. An equal number of players are expected to be shown the door out of Stamford Bridge. Two candidates who would be asked to find other employers are Jose Bosingwa and Salomon Kalou.

Juventus are readying £6million bid for Jose Bosingwa. The pacy right-back who is a Jose Mourinho signing, has failed to pin down his spot in the starting eleven. Bratislav Ivanovic is the first-choice right back at the club. New signing David Luiz can also slot in if needed. Bosingwa was not included in the Chelsea squad in their last game, and it’s almost certain that the Portugese  full-back will leave the club in the summer.

The future of Chelsea’s Ivory Coast strikers is bleak as well. Chelsea have slapped a price tag of £9m over Salomon Kalou. Turkish giants Galatasaray are interested in him and are expected to make a bid. More importantly, the future of Dider Drogba hangs in the balance as well. Drogba has been left out of the eleven after the arrival of Fernando Torres and is not getting any younger by the day.

Tottenham to move for Richards in the summer

March 1, 2011

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly planning a summer move for Manchester City right back Micah Richards. Spurs are expected to bid around £15m for the full back, whose future at City looks to be in doubt because of the possible arrival of Dani Alves from Barcelona in the summer.

Spurs currently have both Vedran Corluka and Alan Hutton available as options on the right side of defence, but neither seem to have done enough in manager Harry Redknapp’s books to secure the position on a long term basis.

Richards was also linked with Spurs last summer, but the move failed to materialise. The pacy defender fits into Redknapp’s mode- the gaffer is known for liking speedy players. However a lot will depend on whether or not Spurs can replicate their league success from last season.

Reds plan swoop for Wendt

March 1, 2011

According to news reports, Liverpool are reportedly planning a summer swoop for FC Copenhagen left back Oscar Wendt. The 25 year old Swedish defender is out of contract at the end of the summer and the Reds have identified him as one potential solution for their left back problem.

Liverpool are currently without a specialist left back, with Paul Konchesky failing to impress and Fabio Aurelio not being able to claim the position as his own. Current manager Kenny Dalglish has used right back Glen Johnson as a stop gap arrangement and also recently fielded young defender Danny Wilson in that position.

However Liverpool are not alone in the chase for Wendt, with Bavarian giants Bayern Munich also reportedly interested in securing the player’s services.
