Nedum Onouha pines for a permanent move

November 21, 2010

After being frozen out of Manchester City with the influx of a host of European players in the summer, Nedum Onouha has found a new home at the Stadium of Light. The England Under 21 international has cemented his place at right back in Steve Bruce’s side and has started around a dozen games for Sunderland in the Premier League.

The time spent on the playing field has boosted his confidence to no end and he is hoping to make him loan move permanent in January. The rise of fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson into the England setup has raised his hopes of an England call-up.

Onouha even scored a scintillating goal at the Stamford Bridge last Sunday when he went past three Chelsea defenders before sliding the ball past a diving Petr Cech; thus becoming the first away player to score at the Bridge.

Onouha started his career in City’s academy and made ninety-four appearances for City, scoring thrice, during seven years at the club.  He explained that leaving City was a very emotional decision. ” It was difficult leaving City. In pre-season I didn’t think I was going to be in Roberto Mancini’s 25-man squad, so it was a case of staying and playing in the reserves or hopefully someone wanting you to be in their squad or side for the season,” Onouha said.

City sets sights on Coentrao

November 21, 2010

Manchester City are readying a £20 million bid for Benfica left back Fabio Coentrao. City have been tracking the versatile Portugese international for quite some time now and have identified Coentrao as one of their prime targets for January. Coentrao is equally comfortable playing at left-back or left midfield and has many admirers across Europe including Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho.

Roberto Mancini is yet to find his best defensive combination at City. Alexander Kolarov, Wayne Bridge, Pablo Zabaleta, Jerome Boateng and Joleon Lescott have played at left-back for City with little or no success this season. Coentrao’s signing could signal the end of the road at City at least for a couple of the above-mentioned players.

Inter Milan, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Liverpool have all inquired about the the dynamic left-back in the past. With a deal that runs on till 2016, it will cost a fortune to nick the starlet off Benfica.

City’s bid for Coentrao could well hinge on them finding buyers for unsettled players such as Adebayor, Bridge, Lescott and Roque Santa Cruz. City are also in pole position to sign Wolfsburg’s Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko.

Speculation about Schweinsteiger hots up

November 8, 2010

With Philip Lahm signing a new contract which would see him stay at Bayern Munich till 2016, all the attention is now on the contract situation of Bastian Schweinsteiger. The German midfielder has two years left on his current contract with Bayern but has admitted on more than one occasion that he would like to play either in England or Spain.

Reports in Spain suggest that Real Madrid are readying a bid to bring the German star to the Santiago Bernabeu. Former German captain Michael Ballack, who after playing for Chelsea has now returned to his homeland for a second stint with Bayer Leverkusen added that Manchester United would be an ideal place for Bastian to showcase his skills on the world stage.

But the 26-year old Schweinsteiger, who has been with Bayern since 2002 has insisted that he would like some time to come to a decision with regards to his future and that Philip Lahm’s decision to sign a new deal would not influence his decision. Bastian, as he is known, has played with great distinction for Bayern making 228 appearances and scoring 24 goals. He has also been a permanent fixture in the German national team having been capped 72 times for his country and scoring 19 goals.
