Official:- Fabio Aurelio rejoins Liverpool

July 31, 2010

Brazilian left back Fabio Aurelio has rejoined Liverpool on a two year contract after being released by the Reds earlier this summer. The 30 year old was a free agent after the expiry of his contract with the Reds, but new boss Roy Hodgson has moved quickly and resigned Aurelio to solve Liverpool’s left back problem.

Liverpool’s first choice left back after Aurelio’s departure, Emiliano Insua, is set to leave Anfield for Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Aurelio told Liverpoolfc.tv that he was delighted to get a second chance to don the Reds jersey.

Aurelio has made 110 appearances for Liverpool since joining them from Valencia CF in 2006.

Premier League Transfer Round Up – Part 2

July 31, 2010

Manchester City:-

Have been the biggest spenders in this summer’s transfer market by some distance and are unlikely to be overtaken when the window comes to a close.

City have splashed out the cash on players such as David Silva, Jerome Boateng, Yaya Toure and Alexsandar Kolarov. Since Mancini took over as manager, City have spent more money in the transfer market than all of England’s top fourteen clubs combined.

Will that result in a CL spot this season? We’ll have to wait and watch.

Manchester United:-

Sir Alex Ferguson has continued to implement a quite transfer policy at Old Trafford. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is the Red Devils’ only major signing from outside England. The only other notable arrival at Old Trafford is young Chris Smalling from Fulham.

Newcastle United:-

The Magpies have made an immediate return to the Premier League by winning the Championship last season. Boss Chris Houghton has signed Dan Gosling from Everton, Sol Campbell on a free from Arsenal and James Perch from Nottingham Forest.

Stoke City:-

Stoke have been linked with several big name players ( remember Pulis wanting to sign Michael Owen last season?), but have so far only netted Florent Cuvelier from relegated Pompey.

Sunderland:-

The Black Cats have been extremely busy in the market as Steve Bruce reinforces his squad. Marcos Angeleri, Titus Bramble, Ahmed Al Muhammadi, Cristian Riveros and Simon Mignolet have all arrived at the Stadium of Light. Eyebrows have been raised, especially at the signing of “Shambles” Bramble, who was mocked at regularly by Sunderland fans when he used to play for Newcastle United.

Tottenham Hotspur:-

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has announced an ambitious scheme of having different shirt sponsors for Premier League and Cup games, but the Lilywhites have not managed to snag anyone of note this summer to don those shirts.

With Spurs competing in the Champions League this season, you can be sure that Redknapp will be making a few signings before this window comes to a close.

West Bromwich Albion:-

Another promoted side like Newcastle, West Brom have made several astute signings this summer. Steven Reid from Blackburn, Boaz Myhill from Hull, Pablo Ibanez from Atletico and Gabriel Tamas from Auxerre have been their main acquisitions.

West Ham United:-

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant is ushering in his own era at West Ham, and has already signed Thomas Hitzlsperger, Frederic Piquionne and Pablo Barrera.

Wigan Athletic:-

The Latics have signed another James from Hamilton Academical- James McArthur, to add to James McCarthy’s signing last season. They have also acquired Antolin Alcaraz, Ali Al Habsi and Mauro Boselli.

Wolverhampton Wanderers:-

Wolves have signed two players from Hull City- Stephen Hunt and Steven Mouyokolo.

Steven Fletcher has arrived from relegated Burnley while Jelle van Damme has signed from Anderlecht.

Premier League Transfer Round Up

July 30, 2010

The new Premier League season is just weeks away and is set to be more competitive than previous seasons. Has your club splashed out millions to strengthen its squad or has it been quiet in the market? We take a look at the transfer activity of all 20 Premier League clubs.

Arsenal:-

Moroccan striker Marouane Chamakh completed his long awaited transfer to Arsenal this summer, while Gunners boss Wenger has also swooped for young French defender Laurent Koscielny.

Francis Coquelin has been loaned to Koscielny’s former club Lorient while Croatian striker Eduardo has left the Emirates for Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

However all Arsenal fans can heave a huge sigh of relief- Cesc Fabregas has not left the club, despite all the photos of him in a Barca shirt after Spain’s World Cup victory floating around the internet.

Aston Villa:-

Despite only narrowly missing out on the Champions League last season, Villa have been quiet in the market. There has been no major player signed, but Stephen Colloran has left for Coventry City. Boss Martin O’Neill also faces a tough fight to keep James Milner at the club in light of interest from big spending Man City.

Birmingham City:-

Villa’s neighbours Birmingham have only made two signings- goalkeeper Ben Foster from Man United, and Spanish midfielder Enric Valles from NAC. Tall striker Nikola Zigic has left for Valencia, while Gary McSheffrey has joined Coventry City.

Blackburn Rovers:-

Funds are limited at Ewood Park and Rovers boss Sam Allardyce must sell players to buy new ones. So far nobody of note has arrived at Blackburn this summer.

Blackpool:-

Premiership new boys Blackpool have a new kit maker in the form of Carbrini and a new shirt sponsor in Wonga but the Seasiders need to bring in personnel if they want to avoid an immediate return to the Championship next season.

Bolton Wanderers:-

Trotters boss Owen Coyle first raided old club Burnley for Robbie Blake and then landed Martin Petrov from Man City and Marcos Alonso from Real Madrid. Three decent signings at the Reebok, one must say.

Chelsea:-

The Blues have allowed Joe Cole and Michael Ballack to leave the club. Their only signing has been Yossi Benayoun from arch rivals Liverpool.

Everton:-

David Moyes has strengthened his forward line by bringing in Jermaine Beckford, Joao Silva and Magaye Gueye. Polish keeper Jan Mucha has been signed as a back up to Tim Howard.

Fulham:-

Last season’s Europa League finalists Fulham lost their manager Roy Hodgson to Liverpool, but have found a more than decent replacement at Mark Hughes. Hughes did not do all that badly at Man City, and was a great hit at Blackburn, a club not quite unlike Fulham.

Jonathan Greening and Philippe Senderos have been the Cottagers’ only signing of the summer.

Liverpool:-

Liverpool’s lack of squad depth was badly exposed last season, when they could only finish a poor seventh in the league. They will not play Champions League football this season. New manager Roy Hodgson has already begun the rebuilding process. Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic and Danny Wilson have been brought in, while Fabio Aurelio has been released.

The big question lies as to whether the Reds will be able to hang on to Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres this summer. It currently looks like Torres will stay, but Mascherano is set to follow in Xabi Alonso’s footsteps by leaving Liverpool for a foreign club, with Italian giants Inter named as the most possible destination.

Garrido set for Lazio move

July 28, 2010

Manchester City’s left back Javier Garrido has agreed terms with Italian side Lazio and will move to the Serie A in a £2.5 million deal. With the arrival of Aleksandr Kolarov and the presence of Wayne Bridge, Garrido became the third choice left back at Eastlands and in all likelihood would not have made the 25- man squad.

Garrido was one of the seven signings made by Sven-Goran Eriksson during his first transfer window as City boss. Garrido is the last of that bunch to leave City. Bianchi, Elano, Giovanni, Petrov, Corluka and Caicedo also failed to cut it with City. Garrido joined City from Real Sociedad in 2007 and scored twice in 49 games. Both goals came from direct free-kicks – one against Liverpool and the other against Wolves.

Meanwhile, City’s former manager Mark Hughes is ready to return to managerial action as he is tipped to be the favourite to fill the vacant managerial post at Fulham.

Official- Sol Campbell seals Magpies switch

July 28, 2010

Newcastle United have officially confirmed the signing of veteran defender Sol Campbell. The 35 year old has signed a one year contract with the Magpies, making them his fifth club after Tottenham, Arsenal, Portsmouth and Notts County.

Campbell will wear the No.5 shirt at Newcastle United. He needs only four more games to complete 500 Premier League appearances. Only David James, Ryan Giggs and Gary Speed have made more league appearances.

Campbell was linked with a move to both Newcastle and Sunderland, but opted for the former. He was known to prefer a switch to the North East because of his recent marriage to interior designer Fiona Barratt, who is based in Northumberland.

Liverpool close to Young capture

July 27, 2010

In a surprising development, Roy Hodgson has tabled a £2.75 million offer for Aston Villa’s England full-back Luke Young. Hodgson tried to sign Young during his tenure as manager of Fulham but without any success. Young, who has been told by Martin O’Neill that he’s surplus to requirements at Villa Park will fill the void left by the exits of Aurelio and Insua. With Phillipe Degen also told to find a new club after a meeting with Hodgson, Young’s arrival was imminent.

Young still has a good three years left on his Villa contract. Villa have been looking to offload Young – one of the highest earners at the club for a long time. Sunderland expressed interest in the 31-year old but negotiations broke down over his salary demands. On current form, Young is a pale shadow of the player who joined Villa from Boro in 2007 for £5.5 million. Young’s stint at Villa was marred by injuries and he was never the same player after he lost his half-brother Andre. Young’s slot at right back was taken over by Carlos Cuellar but he still remained a very popular figure amongst Villa supporters. He got a rapturous applause when he came on as a sub against Blackburn in the last game of the previous season.

Plenty of suitors for Utaka’s sign

July 27, 2010

South coast club Portsmouth are looking to offload John Utaka as they look to cut costs in their first season in the Championship. Utaka’s £35,000-a-week wages are becoming too much for the relegated club to handle especially with the cloud of administration looming large. Pompey are expecting as little as £1 million for the player whom they signed from Rennes for £7 million in 2007.

Utaka claimed to have had offers from leading German clubs in Bayer Leverkusen and FC Cologne but has decided to stay in England. “My manager is looking into the offers before him. Everything is in the air. I would like to stay in the Premier League. It is quick, aggressive and direct and there are loads of goals every week. And, yes, the money in England is also good,” he said.

Bolton, Sunderland and Fulham have expressed interest in the Nigerian. But the statistic that he has scored only seven times in sixty-five games could deter the Premier League clubs from making a move for him.

Balotelli nears City switch

July 27, 2010

City stole a march on it’s competitors in the race for the signature of Inter Milan’s teenage striker Mario Balotelli. Manchester City have reported agreed a £24 million deal with Inter president Massimo Moratti with an added £5 million to be based on appearances and performances. The player has reportedly agreed to a five-year £65,000-a -week contract.

Mario Baruwah Balotelli made his debut for the Nerrazuri back in 2007. Since then he has scored 28 goals in 86 appearances in all competitions. The man who gave Balotelli his break was none other than Manchester City’s current manager – Roberto Mancini. Balotelli thrived under the tutelage of the assured Italian. His form took a battering under the guidance of Mourinho. Mancini sounded positive about City’s chances of signing Balotelli, “Mario has two qualities that suit us: his talent and his age, because I want people able to build a cycle at Manchester City. He (Balotelli) is one of the four or five strikers that interest us. I was the first to believe in him and I’m convinced about what he can do, ” Mancini said.

Balotelli would become City’s fifth signing of the season after Boateng, Yaya Toure, Silva and Kolarov and would take their summer spending to well over £100 million.

Can Hodgson Strengthen Liverpool

July 26, 2010

Although few Premiership clubs other than Manchester City have made many ripples in the transfer market so far this season, there is one club who seem to be making some shrewd moves as well as hanging on to key players that many had expected to see moving on. Who is that team? Why, Liverpool, of course – football betting sites are quoting them at 12/1 to win the Premiership.

Things did not look good for the Reds following the departure of Rafa Benitez and many were forecasting that they would be struggling to hold on to many of their star players over the summer.

Of course since then the big news has been the arrival of new manager Roy Hodgson from Fulham and it soon became clear that he was keen to strengthen the Liverpool squad. He has already moved quickly to sign Serbian Milan Jovanovic on a free transfer from Standard Liege and defender Danny Wilson from Glasgow Rangers for £2 million upfront (although with add-ons linked to games played the total value of the transfer could be close to £5 million).

However it was the news that Joe Cole has opted to move from Chelsea to the Merseysiders that has surprised many in the football world. Cole was a free agent after being released by Chelsea and few would have guessed that he would have considered a move to Liverpool. Whether it proves a wise career move on his part remains to be seen. Without doubt, though, it is a major coup for Hodgson and the Reds.

After the largely unsuccessful big-money signings of the Rafa era it would seem that Liverpool are becoming much more astute in their dealings in the transfer market. A club with debts the size of Liverpool’s cannot afford to hold on to players who are surplus to requirements and the news that Albert Riera has been sold to Olympiacos for £3.5 million will probably be welcomed by most fans. Pity Rafa shelled out £8 million for him in 2008 though.

Of course there has been speculation over other Liverpool players leaving before the start of the new season – Javier Mascherano to name but one. However the arrival of Hodgson and Cole may influence players like Fernando Torres to stay. More good news for Liverpool is that Steve Gerrard has stated that he will be staying with the club.
The first real test that the Reds will face will be on Thursday when they will be up against Macedonian outfit FK Rabotnicki in a UEFA Europa League qualifier at Anfield. Liverpool kick-off their Premiership campaign with a visit from Arsenal on the 14th August. The online betting on them winning that opening match is 8/1. Will there be more comings and goings from Anfield before the transfer window slams shut on the 31st August? We shall have to wait and see.

Sunderland sign Marcos Angeleri

July 24, 2010

Sunderland AFC have announced the signing of right back Marcos Angeleri from Argentine outfit Estudiantes. The 27 year old has moved to the Stadium of Light for an undisclosed fee and has signed a three year deal with the Wearsiders.

Angeleri, who has won three international caps for Argentina, becomes the third South American in the Black Cats’ ranks after Paulo da Silva and Cristian Riveros.

The La Plata born defender has made over 175 appearances for Estudiantes since 2002, and won the 2006 Apertura and 2009 Copa Libertadores with them.

Angeleri becomes Steve Bruce’s fifth summer acquisition at the Stadium of Light after Riveros, Titus Bramble, Simon Mignolet and Ahmed Al-Muhammadi.
