Sunderland close in on Mignolet and Suazo
May 31, 2010
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is close to completing the signing of highly rated Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for a fee of about £2 million. The 21 year old custodian has been earning rave reviews playing for Sint Truidense in the Jupiler League. Even at the very young age of 21, Mignolet has 71 caps for Sint Truidense in the Belgian League and has represented his country at U21 level. He was shown around the Stadium of Light and the club’s training ground this weekend sparking rumours that the deal is all but done. The signing puts immense pressure on Scott Gordon who has not lived upto his £9 million price tag.
The Black Cats are also coveting Chile striker Humberto Suazo in what could be a very difficult transfer. His current club Monterrey loaned him out to Real Zaragoza last season where he was a success. After buying him for £2.5 million in 2007, Monterrey are expecting Sunderland to fork out £14 million for his services. The Black Cats are exploring the option of a loan deal.
Elsewhere, Sunderland have bid £2 million for Estudiantes right back Marcos Angeleri and are interested in striker Mauro Boselli.

Cole nears Chelsea exit as Blues move for Benayoun
May 30, 2010
Winger Joe Cole is nearing an exit from Stamford Bridge after latest contract negotiations with Chelsea failed to materialise into something concrete. Cole is out of contract this summer and is one of the most sought after players in the free transfer market. The former West Ham star reportedly wanted his wages to be hiked to £100,000, but Chelsea, who are looking to stabilise their wage structure, were not willing to meet his demands and are prepared to let him go.
Cole has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, old club West Ham as well as Liverpool. Meanwhile the Reds have received an £4m offer from Chelsea for Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun, which they have rejected. However a bid of around £6m is likely to do the trick, with Benayoun himself saying that “in the end, I’ll be moving to Stamford Bridge.”
Spurs are the favourites to secure Cole on a free transfer as it would enable him to stay in London as well as show his talents in the Champions League.

Everton keep themselves busy in the market
May 30, 2010
A whole lot of players have been linked to David Moyes’ side over the last week. The Toffees are keeping a close eye on PSG’s Benin international midfielder Stephane Sessegnon who is actively looking to quit the Parisian club after the fans turned on him at the end of last season. Moyes has frequently sent scouts to watch him play in the French league.
Moyes is also hot on the chase of Blackpool captain Charlie Adam who led his side to a playoff win against Cardiff and secured promotion to the Premier League. Adam scored 16 goals from midfield for Blackpool and has seen his stature rise gradually during the same time period. Everton are also expected to make an offer for Newcastle defender Steven Taylor who enters the last year of his contract with the Magpies. They are also hoping to beat Newcastle to the signing of Leeds United captain Jermaine Beckford.
News from Portugal indicates that Everton have been offered the services of Argentine playmaker Pablo Aimar by Benfica. Everton are weighing up a move for the 30-year old former Valencia star. They are also hopeful of pricing away Oscar Cardozo from Benfica but might choose not to pursue it with vigour if they complete Beckford’s signing.

Jermaine Beckford set to complete Toffees switch
May 29, 2010
Highly rated young striker Jermaine Beckford is set to complete a switch to Everton in the coming week. Beckford has already had his contract with Leeds United terminated by mutual consent and Everton have offered him a four deal which the player has agreed to.
Beckford’s contract with Leeds was originally due to expire in June. The club received several offers from interested parties in the winter market but rejected them in the hope of keeping the forward at Elland Road. Leeds did achieve promotion from League One but were unable to get Beckford to put pen to paper a new deal.
Beckford is expected to become Everton’s second signing of the summer after keeper Jan Mucha.
Meanwhile Leeds boss Simon Grayson is expected to step up his efforts to find a replacement for the prolific Beckford, who was named as League One’s Player of the Season in March. Beckford scored eighty five goals for the club and is the only player in Leeds history to bag over thirty goals in two successive campaigns. Billy Sharp, Gary Hooper and Rob Hulse are three names on Grayson’s radar as potential candidates to fill the void left by Beckford.

West Brom close to signing Reid and Ibanez
May 26, 2010
After securing promotion to the Premier League, West Brom are looking to add reinforcements to their squad with the intent that their tenure in the English top flight lasts much longer than the previous time. The Baggies have completed the signing of former Blackburn midfielder Steven Reid on a Bosman transfer. The Republic of Ireland international has signed a two year contract with the Hawthorns club. He will join the club on July 1 subject to passing a medical test.
Reid had spent the latter part of the 2009-10 season on loan at WBA where he played 10 times scoring once. Coach Roberto di Matteo was very impressed by Reid’s influence both on and off the field and decided to make a permanent move. He provides another option to the Albion midfield with Robert Koren likely to leave the club for greener pastures.
WBA are also tracking Atletico Madrid defender Pablo Ibanez. Accroding to reports, Ibanez arrived at the Hawthorns yesterday for a medical. The Spaniard who has 23 international caps spent greater part of last season warming the bench of the Europa League winners and West Brom could do with his versatility and experience.
On the other hand, West Brom may be forced to part ways with Youssuf Mulumbu. The Congo international made 44 appearances for the Baggies last season but has just one year left on his current contract and is considering his options. Newcastle are leading the chase for the 23-year old African.

Torres staying at Liverpool
May 26, 2010
Liverpool star striker Fernando Torres will stay at the merseyside club for another season, according to the players agent Jose Antonio Peton.
Torres is regarded as one of the worlds best strikers and is being hunted by host of top European teams including Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Premier League Champions Chelsea.

Fabio Aurelio to leave Liverpool
May 25, 2010
Liverpool’s Brazilian left back Fabio Aurelio is set to quit the club after a four year spell. The 30-year old became the first Brazilian to sign for the Merseyside club when he joined in 2006 on a free transfer from Valencia. Aurelio’s career in England has been blighted by injuries prompting Rafa Benitez to offer him a pay-as-you-play deal which was rejected by Aurelio.
In his four years at the club, the former Sao Paolo man made just 71 appearances and scored thrice. Aurelio missed the major part of the 2009-10 season through injury. He missed the start of the season with a freak knee problem and his season ended prematurely in February when he was sidelined with a thigh injury.
The emergence of Emiliano Insua as the first choice left back had also compounded Aurelio’s worries. Fabio was no longer sure of a spot in the starting eleven.
In other news, Liverpool have decided against signing Rangers defender Danny Wilson when they found out that he would not meet the Premier League’s home-grown quota. A deal in the region of about £2million had been agreed for the 18-year old but negotiations fizzled out when it was understood that ‘home grown’ status was only to be given to players from England and Wales.

Pienaar who has only a year remaining on his current deal has not ruled out the possibility of staying at Goodison Park but negotiation have gone slow.
Pienaar said: “I’d say the spirit of the discussions was very good, but we have differing valuations, so my future isn’t clear,”
“Everton may keep me for the last year of my deal. If they decide to sell, and the move is correct for my career, then I’ll consider it.
“Hopefully this hasn’t been my last season, but who knows?”
