Barcelona chasing Robinho
October 11, 2009
Spanish giants Barcelona are believed to be interested in signing Brazilian superstar Robinho who plies his trade with Premier League Manchester City. The European Champions have refused to rule out a move for the little Brazilian.
He previously played for Barca’s bitter rivals Real Madrid before joining City in 2008 for £32.5million. He has continuously been linked with a move back to Spain. He has always declared that he is happy at Eastlands but a move to Barca could be a big temptation.
The 25 year-old is out injured at the moment after picking up an ankle injury on international duty. He may find his path in to the first team blocked with Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Craig Bellamy all currently in decent form. Bellamy has been in superb form this season so far and Emmanuel Adebayor is back after serving a suspension. Carlos Tevez is also just starting to get back to best.
Barca’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain has failed to deny reports linking the former Santos star with his club and knows that should the Brazilian join in January he could appear in the Champions League. He told Sport: “He’s a very interesting player and can play in the Champions League,”
Born in 1984, Robinho is still young, and will probably be playing with the Brazilian team in the World Cup 2010 and in the World Cup 2014.

Hoyte joins Seagulls as Taylor leaves Wycombe
October 9, 2009
League One side Brighton have signed young full-back Gavin Hoyte from Arsenal on a months loan. The 19 year-old is highly rated and has been allowed to leave the Gunners to gain valuable first team experience. He made his debut for the first team in September 2008 in the Carling Cup and has also featured in the Premier League.
Brighton manager Russell Slade has signed the youngster due to the fact he will be without Andy Whing through injury and Adam El Abd through suspension. Gavin’s the brother of Middlesborough ace Justin and could be in the Seagulls squad to face Yeovil at the weekend.
Meanwhile former England under-21 boss Peter Taylor has left League One side Wycombe Wanderers by mutual consent. Wanderers are second from bottom in their league and have struggled all season. Taylor’s assistant Junior Lewis has also left the club.
Wycombe owner Steve Hayes paid tribute to Taylor telling the clubs official website: “Peter is an honourable man and he knew that it was time to move on.
“He came to me and said he was very disappointed with the way the season has begun and understood that things had to change. He leaves with our thanks and best wishes for the future and I want to place on record our gratitude for the excellent job he did for us last season in getting us promoted.
“Wycombe have a reputation for appointing good managers and I’m sure we’ll get plenty of high calibre applicants. Peter’s successor will inherit an excellent squad of players and with 35 games still to play we’re confident that our league position will improve.”

Sunderland interested in signing Zenden
October 8, 2009
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has admitted that his club have been impressed by midfield trialist Boudewijn Zenden. The 33 year-old is currently training at the club after being released by Marseille in the summer at the end of his contract.
The Dutch winger has previously played for Barcelona, Liverpool and Chelsea. Bruce is looking for a creative option in his side and has been looking over the former Dutch international. Bruce told the Sunderland Echo: “I got a call from Bolo a little while ago and he said he was without a club so I invited him down to train,”
“He’s had a great career at some huge clubs and when an opportunity comes to look at someone with that background then you take it. He looks in very good nick, considering he has not had a club. He has been training in Holland and has obviously looked after himself very well.”
Bruce continued: “One thing that does concern me slightly is that we’re a little light on numbers. Bolo has played at the highest level and can cover a few positions. He’ll work with us for a couple of weeks and we’ll take it from there. I dare say I’ll sit down and talk with him after our next game.
“At the moment, there is no commitment on either side. He’s having a look at us and we’re having a look at him. But certainly his past record shows he has the calibre that you need in the Premier League.”

Grant makes Pompey return and Burnley sign keeper
October 7, 2009
Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant has returned to Portsmouth as director of football. Grant was previously in the same post for 12 months when Harry Redknapp was at Fratton Park. He left his position to join Chelsea in 2007, where he eventually succeeded Jose Mourinho as the Blues boss.
He guided the Blues to a Champions Final where they were beaten on penalties by Manchester United and also second place in the Premier League. He left the Blues soon after that defeat and has been out of football until now.
New chairman Ali Al-Faraj has been in charge less than 48 hours after he took control of the club from Sulaiman Al-Fahim and has already made his first big decision with the appointment of the Israeli. Grant has signed a three-year deal with Pompey.
He told Israeli website One: “I am happy to return to the best league in the world, the English league,”
Elsewhere Premier League rivals Burnley have completed the signing of young goalkeeper Jonathan Lund. The 20 year-old had been on trial at the Clarets and has signed a deal till the end of the season. Lund has previously played for Leeds and last season Grimsby. Lund could make his debut for the reserves against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Coventry fail in Vokes bid
October 6, 2009
Championship side Coventry have failed in a loan bid for Wolves striker Sam Vokes according to his manager Mick McCarthy. The Sky Blues were in talks with their Midlands rivals over a loan deal but the deal fell through after the Championship side stopped negotiations. The youngster is highly rated at Molineux but Wolves were prepared to let him leave to get valuable first team experience.
Coventry were unhappy with some of the terms of the loan deal. Wolves wanted a 24 hour recall clause in the contract and wouldn’t allow him to play in the FA Cup. The Sky Blues decided to call off the deal with their strikeforce of Leon Best and Clinton Morrison already hitting 12 goals between them.
McCarthey told the Express & Star: “The option for him to go to Coventry may well have gone, because it hasn’t been done,”
“It was set up to be done but they didn’t do it, so we’ll see because there are a few clubs that want him.
“More than likely a loan will happen, but not just yet because he’s gone away with Wales. There’s nothing going to happen for a while.
“Where he goes, I don’t know, but it’s been a shame for Sam.”

Reo-Coker denies move rumour
October 5, 2009
Out of favour Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker agent has rubbished rumours that he could be in line for a move to Championship side Middlesbrough. The former West Ham star fell out with Villa boss Martin O’Neill after a row on the training ground last month.
O’Neill has insisted that the matter is over and done with but the player has still been linked with a move away from the club. The former Celtic boss has also revealed that Reo-Coker is still in his plan after featuring heavily before the training ground row.
His agent Tony Finnigan told Skysports.com:”Nigel is a proven Premier League player, and he has no plans whatsoever to drop down to the Championship,”
“That is no disrespect to Middlesbrough, Gareth Southgate is a former team-mate of mine and I think he is a very good manager, and Boro are a great club – but they are not a Premier League club.
“But to be honest, we are talking as if Nigel is on his way – let me assure you that is not the case.
“I have not spoken about Nigel’s future with Villa and they have not informed me that they are looking to sell him, and so Nigel – as the consummate professional he is – is battling for a first-team place at Villa until told otherwise.”

Rosicky looking for new deal
October 4, 2009
Arsenal midfielder Thomas Rosicky is hoping to sign a new contract at the Emirates Stadium. The Czech Republic ace has just came back from 18 months of injury problems and was in the Arsenal side that hammered Blackburn 6-2.
His contract with the Gunners expires at the end of the season but the former Dortmund star wants to extend his stay at the Emirates in to next season. He has already talked to boss Arsene Wenger about the situation and hopes to open negotiations with the club in the near future.
“I spoke recently to the boss about a new contract,” said Rosicky. “We haven’t started negotiating yet and we’ll see what happens.
“I want to stay and my fitness is getting better and better. You miss the Champions League and the Premier League when you are out for so long.”
The 29 year-old is prepared to fight for his place now that he is back to fitness. He continued: “It’s always huge competition for places. When you can see how many offensive players we have – against Olympiakos, Eduardo, Nicklas Bendtner, Theo Walcott, Samir Nasri and Carlos Vela did not start – we have many, many options.
“I definitely think our squad is as good as all our rivals. Even when we lost twice in Manchester we made stupid mistakes and just need to learn from them.”

Middlesbrough looking for new striker
October 3, 2009
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has suggested that he may bring in a new striker. The Boro chief lost striker Caleb Folan through injury just a few weeks after joining on-loan from Hull City. Folan didn’t even have a chance to start a match for the Teesiders.
The north east side will now look at the situation with the Hull striker set to be out injured for up to six weeks. Boro now only have three strikers to call on from Jeremie Aliadiere, Marvin Emnes and Leroy Lita. Southgate knows he needs more options in attack.
“Caleb’s injury is a relatively long one so it’s something we have to look at. We still have three strikers fit and we’ve got competition for places.
“What we will look at is whether we’ve got the right sort of cover for all situations. It’s something we are looking at closely.”
Striker Leroy Lita is likely to start against former club Reading this weekend. Southgate is expected to hand the former Royals striker the chance to prove himself from the start.
“But he held the ball up well, closed defenders down and got in headers at goal. In fact he looked quite a threat.”

Vieira close to leaving Inter
October 2, 2009
French international midfielder Patrick Vieira has admitted that he will leave Italian champions Inter if he continues to be on the fringe of the starting 11.The former Arsenal skipper was linked with a move back to the Gunners, Tottenham and Ligue 1 side PSG during the summer.
However the 33 year-old decided to stay with Italian giants and fight for his place in the first team. Unfortunately for the Frenchman he has only made three starts in all competitions and has been frustrated by the lack of regular playing time.
He needs to be playing regularly for his club or he could miss out on France’s squad for next year’s World Cup in South Africa. He was left out of a recent France squad due to him experiencing a lack of time on the pitch. It doesn’t appear he will get the chance for regular playing time at the San Siro and a move in January would help his cause.
“If nothing changes then yes (I will leave),” he told L’Equipe.
“I need rhythm, a run of matches at a high level. I don’t want to make any conclusions before December.
“If my situation hasn’t changed from now until then, I will take the necessary decisions. If I don’t play a lot more it could be problematic.”

Guardado wants Dos Santos signing
October 1, 2009
Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Andres Guardado is hopeful that compatriot Giovani Dos Santos will join him in La Liga. The Tottenham youngster has been linked with a move to Deportivo in the January transfer window. The former Barcelona star has been frozen out of Premier League duties with his only appearances coming in the Carling Cup.
He was the star of his sides Gold Cup victory but has found his opportunities at White Hart Lane limited since his move from the Camp Nou. Deportivo boss Miguel Angel Lotina is believed to be keen on the Mexican international and his international teammate Guardado believes the player would benefit from first team football.
Guardado told AS: “If Giovani came then we would be able to count on a quality player who has huge potential and can help raise the level of the team,”
“He is a great player and I am not just saying that because he is Mexican too but because he is going through a very good time on a personal level.
“In his club side though he is not being given much time to play and it would be great if he went to another team because he is a very important player for Mexico and if he came here then even better.”
