Windass hoping for Grimsby chance
October 20, 2009
Former Hull and Bradford City striker Dean Windass has revealed he hopes to get the chance to be boss of League Two Grimsby. The Mariners sacked Mike Newell on Sunday after a dreadful run of results which saw the club lose four consecutive games.
The 40 year-old only retired from playing on Monday and is keen to get straight back into the game. He spent some time as player-coach at Darlington under Colin Todd but left the club last month after Todd was sacked due to a poor run of form.
He told the press: “I have applied for the job at Grimsby. The fact I’ve just retired as a player was purely coincidental, but this is too good an opportunity for me to let it pass by.
“I was disappointed not to get the chance at Darlington when (manager) Colin (Todd) left and I’ve always said I wanted to be a manager, to make my own decisions and be my own man. I’ve said that for many years now. Grimsby would be a great club for me to start my managerial career and I believe I’ve got the hunger and attributes to make a real success of it.”

Championship side Derby have made an enquiry about Ipswich striker Jon Stead. Derby have lost a host of strikers in recent weeks. They are currently without Steven Davies and Chris Porter who are long-term casualties. They have also lost on-loan Everton striker James Vaughan to injury.

Derby boss Nigel Clough has admitted that the deal is probably along way off. He said: “Jon Stead is a player that we have asked about. However, I don’t think that there will be any movement in this direction at the moment.”
Clough also revealed that he wants to keep Fulham defender Fredrik Stoor at the club. The 25 year-old is on-loan at the Rams but is currently suffering from an ankle injury. Despite the injury the former Burton boss wants to extend the loan deal.
He added: “So long as Freddie is going to be fit a week after that game, we will look to extend the loan because he has settled in and done very well indeed. I think he has improved as each game has gone on. His ankle has reduced in size since Saturday – it was badly swollen after the Leicester game.”

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has sent Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour a letter stating that he is still in his thoughts. The Standard captain is currently out injured after breaking a bone in his foot.
Defour was linked with moves to Premier league Everton and Manchester City. The Toffee’s had a £9million bid rejected during the summer and the Belgian international could still make a move to the Premier League in the January transfer window.
However a move in January looks unlikely due to the 21 year old’s injury. It seems that the English champions are now looking at making a move for the star next summer. United boss Ferguson has reassured Defour in the letter that he is still interested in signing him.
The letter which was released to the media read:”Dear Steven, I have just heard about your injury and, in the name of Manchester United, I would like to wish you a full and speedy recovery. I am sure at the moment you must be feeling awful and that you’ll have all kinds of questions.
“Steven, these are natural worries but I have to tell you that modern medicine and treatments are incredible, you have to have confidence in them. I’m going to follow your progress closely and I will remain in contact with your club to have news of your recovery.” Defour was grateful for Ferguson’s letter and told the media that he went through the right channels by sending the letter through his club. He told Het Laatste Nieuw:
“One thing I should like to highlight is that Ferguson has followed his interest officially. He addressed the letter to Standard. I think the attention is great, but I do not want people to think I am already at Manchester, which is by no means the case. But if they come knocking, then I would obviously not cause problems.”

October 13, 2009
Premier League Wolves have distanced themselves from a move for Coventry striker Leon Best. Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is an admirer of Best’s abilities and they have been linked with a £1.5million bid for the former Southampton youngster. The 23 year-old has been in good form this season in the Championship scoring three goals.
Best’s contract with the Midlander’s runs out next summer, when he could move on a free transfer. Wolves were reported to be interested in signing Best in the January transfer window.
There was also a suggestion that young striker Sam Vokes could be part of a deal. The Welsh striker nearly joined the Sky Blues in the last transfer window but the deal through due to certain terms of the deal. However chief executive Jez Moxey has denied any contact has been made between the two clubs.
He told the Express and Star: “There’s nothing in it – I’m happy to say there’s no truth in this. Mick has always thought of Leon Best as a good player but we have bought Stefan Maierhofer and we still have Chris Iwelumo to come back from injury, so we have two players covering the role that player can play.
“Given the player’s contractual status, I would have thought he was more likely to allow his contract to run out and become a free agent.”
