Official: Wigan sign Diame

August 21, 2009

Wigan Athletic boss has swooped for French defensive midfielder Mohammed Diame to fill the void left by Lee Cattermole’s departure to Sunderland. After weeks of pursuit, Martinez was able to close the deal for the talented midfielder of Senegalese origin. Wigan offered €3.8 million to Rayo Vallecano for his services.

Diame joined Rayo from CD Linares in 2008. He played 35 games for Rayo scoring twice for them. His performances attracted a lot of attention from various clubs like Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Diame was close to a switch to the Emirates Stadium in January before the move fell through.

Diame’s deal to Wigan was held up after the medical revealed heart concerns for the midfielder. But Martinez has finally been given the go ahead by his medical staff. He joins Antonio Amaya and is expected to slot right into the squad for the game against Manchester United.

Martinez was very upbeat about his new signings -

“We are quite close to agreeing everything, and the main thing now is thrashing out the personal terms,” the 36-year-old told The Wigan Evening Post. “Hopefully that will be done quite soon and they will be excellent signings for the future.”I’ve followed their progress and development for a long time, and they will bring something different to our squad.”I’m happy with the way the squad is developing; there’s a tremendous work ethic and a fantastic spirit in the camp.”I’m very excited about the challenge ahead and the players are very focused and ready for that challenge.”I’ve got huge confidence in the quality of the squad, we have a good core of players and we are getting stronger every day.”

Krygiakos near to Liverpool move

August 20, 2009

Greek international defender Sotiris Krygiakos has agreed to join Liverpool from AEK Athens for a fee in the region of £1.5million. The 30 year-old revealed the move on his official website: “Last week I said I was an AEK player for the next four years and meant that,”

Sunderland close in on Mensah

August 19, 2009

After completing an astute signing of Lorik Cana from Marseille, Steve Bruce has turned his attention to France yet again in a bid to sign Lyon stopper John Mensah. Sunderland are looking to sign the Ghana defender on a season long loan deal with an option for a permanent move. Bruce is looking to complete the deal in the next 48 hours so that Mensah can slot into the team for the weekend’s game against Blackburn Rovers.

After moving to Lyon from Rennes in 2008 for a staggering €8.4 million, Mensah has not been getting enough playing time at Lyon having made only 12 appearances last season. Mensah will bring a lot of experience to Sunderland’s defence. Mensah has 58 caps for Ghana and was also voted as the French League’s Player of the Year back in 2006.

Steve Bruce sounded very upbeat about his defensive target -

“The John Mensah thing is getting close. We are edging towards that one. It looks as if we might be able to have that one in the bag. It’s fair to say that we are close to agreeing a deal. I’ll hopefully know more in the next 24-48 hours, but we hope so”.

Bruce is still looking for new defenders after Paraguay international Paulo da Silva’s move from Mexican side Toluca hit administrative difficulties.

Chelsea sell Pizarro to Werder Bremen

August 18, 2009

Werder Bremen have completed the signing of Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro for an undisclosed fee. Pizarro spent last season on loan at the German club and scored 17 goals for them helping them to win the German Cup and reach the final of the UEFA Cup. The Peruvian forward who had spent two highly successful years at Werder Bremen from 1999 to 2001 returned to Stamford Bridge at the end of last season. But with stern competition for places from the likes of Drogba, Anelka and Kalou; he decided to move on. Pizarro had a pretty disappointing stint with Chelsea scoring only twice in 21 appearances for the London club. Claudio’s move is a positive signing for the German club who are looking for reinforcements after losing Brazilian playmaker Diego to Juventus.

A statement on Chelsea’s official website read: “Claudio Pizarro has signed a permanent deal with Werder Bremen.”All at the club wish Claudio well for the future.”

Chelsea have also snapped up talented Serbian Nemanja Matic for a fee of £1.5million from Slovenian side MFK Kosice. Matic has spent three seasonsin Slovakia and was part of the Serbia Under 21 squad that competed at this summer’s European Championship. He has also won two full caps.

Matic was very excited about his move to the Blues -

‘I know a lot about Chelsea, I have been following them,’ he said.

‘I play together with Branislav in the national team and have spoken to him about Chelsea. The first time when I met him to play in the national team I asked a couple of questions.

‘I am a solid midfielder, I have a lot to offer and for sure to progress and I will show everyone why I am at Chelsea.

‘I am a central midfielder and I know I am not well known but I have physical power and I am quite a technical, left-footed player.’

August 18, 2009

Serbian youngster Nemanja Matic has completed his move from Kosice to Chelsea for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.75million. The Serbian under-21 star has signed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge, but will have to wait to make his debut as he picked up an injury in the under-21 Championships.

Matic told Chelsea’s official website: “I know a lot about Chelsea, I have been following them,”

“I play together with Branislav (Ivanovic) in the national team and have spoken to him about Chelsea. The first time I met him to play in the national team I asked a couple of questions.”

“I am a solid midfield player, I have a lot to offer and for sure to progress and I will show everyone why I am at Chelsea,” he continued.

“I am a central midfielder, and I know I am not well known but I have physical power and I am a quite technical, left-footed player.

“Since the age of 18 I have been at Kosice and before that I had played in the youth team of Red Star Belgrade.”

Matic has had a previous experience in England having had a trial at Middlesbrough in January, but didn’t particularly enjoy his trip to the north east. He will be hoping this move will prove more pleasurable.

“I was there in the winter, when I came it was winter in the north of England so it was not very nice, but the squad was okay and I liked it,” he said.

Official: Duff signs for Fulham

August 18, 2009

Fulham have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland international Damien Duff from Newcastle for a fee believed to be about £4million. As reported earlier on the site, Roy Hodgson was very keen on the 30-year old winger who had played for him before at Blackburn Rovers. Duff becomes the eighth player to leave Newcastle after the Magpies were relegated from the Premier League. He follows Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins, Habib Beye, David Edgar, Peter Lovenkrands, Sebastien Bassong and Mark Viduka out of the exit door.

Duff has signed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage and will go straight into the Fulham squad for the game against Chelsea on Sunday. The move to the Premiership was also welcomed by Ireland manager Giovanni Trappatoni who had expressed concerns over Duff’s international future if he continued in the Championship. The lure of playing Europa League football was also a major factor in Duff’s decision. Fulham start their Europa league campaign against Amkar Perm on Thursday. Duff becomes Fulham’s third signing of the window after Stephen Kelly and Bjorn Helge Riise.

Fulham confirmed they have landed the Irish winger on the club’s official website stating, “Fulham Football Club is delighted to announce that Damien Duff becomes the Club’s third signing of the summer having put pen to paper today on a three-year deal.”

Duff also expressed his delight over playing for Hodgson and Fulham -

Fulham had a fantastic season last year and I know that having spoken to the manager in recent days that the club’s ambitions remain high and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.’
