Toffees Sweet On Huddlestone
June 25, 2009
It’s been reported that Everton have had a bid in the region of £8.5million accepted for Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone. The player is highly rated but Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is expected to have a major overhaul of his squad this summer and the former England under-21international could be amongst those to exit White Hart Lane. The player has become frustrated at not being a regular starter and looks set to move on this summer.
The burly midfielder is also attracting the interests of Aston Villa and big spending Manchester City, but Everton appear to be the first club to have made their move. David Moyes is looking to sign a midfield anchorman and Huddlestone fits the bill perfectly. Not only is Huddlestone a good tackler, he also has tremendous vision on the ball and can pick out a killer pass.
Villa have already been linked with a swap deal involving Huddlestone and their out of favour midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and they could renew their interest in the player in the light of this reported news. Manchester City however have been linked with the player also, but City could pursue other options with seemingly a bottomless pit of money available to manager Mark Hughes.

Official- Real Madrid sign Raul Albiol
June 25, 2009
Real Madrid have signed Spanish international defender Raul Albiol from fellow Primera division side Valencia. Albiol is currently with the Spanish team in South Africa ( they lost their semifinal yesterday night to the United States), and will undergo a medical next week. The fee agreed between the two clubs was not revealed but sources say that it is somewhere around €15m ( £12m+).
Albiol is Florentino Perez’s third signing of the summer after Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. He will put pen to paper a five year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu if he passes his medical.
Albiol started his career at Valencia, and has spent his whole life at the Mestalla barring a small time on loan at Real’s city rivals Getafe. He is primarily a central defender, but can also play as a holding midfielder.
Real and Valencia could do further business this summer if the two clubs can agree upon a fee for international striker David Villa. Reports suggest that Real are very close to clinching the deal, and only a few financial details need to be ironed out at this stage of negotiations.

Birmingham City snap up Hart and Espinoza
June 24, 2009
Newly promoted Premiership side Birmingham City made their initial foray into the transfer market by signing Manchester City’s England U-21 keeper Joe Hart on a season long loan deal and Ecuadorian central defender Giovanny Espinoza.
Joe Hart lost his place at Manchester City after the arrival of Shay Given at Newcastle United and sitting on the bench was proving to be detrimental for his England prospects. Hart, who has a solitary senior cap for England, has been permitted to join Birmingham on a season long loan for the season leading into the World Cup, after City signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Stuart Taylor on a free transfer from Aston Villa.
” By loaning him to Birmingham, he will add invaluable experience to that already gained here at City ” – Manchester City manager Mark Hughes on Joe Hart
Giovanny Espinoza is an experienced central defender who has been part of Ecuador’s squad for two World Cups -2002 and 2006 and has more than 80 caps for his nation. He also has experience of playing in Europe with Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem and had spells at Aucas, Monterrey, Cruziero. He’s been signed from the club Barcelona SC in his homeland for an undisclosed amount. Espinoza told Birmingham’s official website -
“I’m very much looking to playing for this club. It’s a new step in my football career and I hope I can help the team.
“I think I can bring experience to the defence as I’ve played a lot of games at club level and for the national team. My objective is the same as the team, to first of all help the club remain in the Premier League.
“On a personal level I hope to establish myself in the team, give 100% in every game and play as much as possible.”

Stoke join race for Owen
June 24, 2009
Stoke City are the latest Premier League club to join the race for soon to be free agent Michael Owen. Potters boss Tony Pulis said that he would be interested in throwing his hat into the ring if it was viable.
Hull City, who were promoted with Stoke to the Premier League last year, are also interested in securing Owen’s services. Hull manager Phil Brown has said that he will hold talks with Owen’s representatives.
Owen’s estimated £100,000+ a week contract at Newcastle comes to an end this month, and the former Liverpool hitman has said that he does not want to ply his trade in the Championship. Interest has also come from Spain and Italy, but Owen is said to prefer a move to an English club.
Bookies have Aston Villa as the favourites to sign Owen. He will be reunited with Emile Heskey if he does land up at Villa Park, and the Midlands outfit could certainly do with a player of Owen’s experience. It could be the extra thing they need to break the hegemony of the top four, assuming Owen does not have another injury wrecked season.

Caicedo Set For City Exit
June 24, 2009
Manchester City striker Felipe Caicedo is set to leave the club after the arrival of Roque Santa Cruz and the impending transfer of Carlos Tevez from Manchester United. Wigan, West Ham and Sporting Lisbon have all been linked with a move for the Ecuadorean.
Despite Caicedo managing nine goals in 14 starts last season, the player is still set for the Eastlands exit door this summer. His agent Saif Rubie has admitted that there is big interest in the player.
“There is a huge amount of interest in Felipe across the world,” Rubie told skysports.com.
“There are offers on the table and we will look at all the scenarios when Felipe returns from holiday in Ecuador.
“At this point of his career Felipe wants to be playing regularly and he did very well when he was given the opportunity last season.
“Everyone knows Sporting Lisbon are ready to take Felipe as are other clubs in the Premier League and elsewhere in Europe and we will look at all options open to us before a decision.
“If a suitable offer arrives we will look at it, but if Manchester City want to keep him and offer Felipe a new deal he would consider that also.
“We will sit down and try and resolve Felipe’s future very soon.”

Manchester United want Aguero
June 23, 2009
Manchester United are reportedly ready to pay as much as €60 million to Atletico Madrid to secure the services of Sergio Aguero. After missing out on the permanent signature of fellow Argentinian Carlos Tevez, United have made Kun their top transfer priority for the off-season. Aguero, who is Maradona’s son-in-law,has not been in tremendous form over the last 12 months but is still regarded as one of the hottest youngsters in Europe.
Atletico Madrid have categorically denied their desire to sell their main players – Forlan and Aguero. It seems that Manchester United would have to trigger Aguero’s release clause if they fancy a move for Sergio. Atletico chairman Enrique Cerezo has voiced his desire to keep all his stars at Vicente Calderon -
We do not want to sell and we are calm about everything,”
“We have a good team at present and we are going to strengthen it every which way we can. We are absolutely calm. We are not afraid of anything or anybody. [The players] have contracts which we have respected and we expect to be shown the same respect.”
Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, have some shopping to do themselves. They are closing in on the signing of Real Valladolid goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo. But Cerezo has stated that the deal is not yet complete.

June 23, 2009

“We have offered Daniel a deal that we think is at the level he should be at.
“He is in a strong position because he is in the last year of his contract

“Obviously I have made my intentions very clear to him I would like him to stay but it may be out of our hands.”

Roque Santa Cruz completes Manchester City switch
June 22, 2009
As mentioned here a few days ago, Paraguay international Roque Santa Cruz has signed a four year contract with Mancheser City after passing a thorough medical examination which lasted over five hours. The 27 year old striker, who was voted the sexiest player of the 2006 World Cup becomes City’s second signing of the transfer window after Gareth Barry. Manchester City have reported paid $25 million up front for his services with another $4 million depending on appearances and performance.
Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has worked with Santa Cruz at Blackburn previously where he enjoyed the most successful season of his career, scoring 23 goals in 43 games. After that sensational debut season in England, Roque’s form has tapered away due to recurrent injuries. He managed only 6 goals last season and missed more than half of Blackburn’s Premier League campaign.
“The owners want the club to be more successful. They want to break into the top four, and the fact that the fans are so passionate about everything to do with City was also a factor. I am very motivated to play for these fans.”
“I know the kind of football Mark Hughes wants to play and the kind of character he is – he’s a winner, he wants to make things happen and be successful.
“Those are always my thoughts as well, so knowing what he wants was a big factor in coming here, because I know the club is going in the right direction.”
Hughes also was fairly satisfied with his most recent acquisition in the transfer market.
“His ability in the air and his physical presence are qualities we’ve been missing, but he also has technical ability and good pace for a big man.”
“He’s a very good player and one I know well from our time at Blackburn.”
City now turn their attention to other targets such as Lescott, Toure, Tevez and Eto’o.

Defour Set For Everton Move
June 22, 2009
Belgian champions Standard Liege have rejected a bid for midfielder Steven Defour from Everton. The club are believed to want £12.6 million for their star midfielder, but Everton’s bid is believed to be lowered than that figure.
Defour told HLN “How high was the bid? I do not know, you would need to ask Luciano D’Onofrio [Standard vice-president] that question,”
However the 21 year old is happy to stay at the Belgian champions with Champions League football on the table next season. He continued “For now I wait quietly, I feel good at Standard, especially now we are in the Champions League,”
“But I would be ready to move abroad, but the transfer will come when all parties are happy.”
He is highly rated throughout Europe and it looks likely that he will leave Liege this summer after major speculation about his future.
David Moyes is looking to strengthen his squad for a challenge on the top four next season and a central midfielder looks likely to be top of his hit list. Liverpool and Aston Villa have also shown an interest in Defour this summer, but it’s the Toffee’s who have made the first move and could up their bid to capture the players signature.

Roma switch for Sheva?
June 22, 2009
According to newspaper reports, Italian Serie A side AS Roma are prepared to offer Andriy Shevchenko a route out of London. The Giallorossi, who are currently £250m+ in debt, are in talks for a takeover, and may make an official approach for Shevchenko once their financial position improves.
Shevchenko, who has a year left on his Chelsea contract, has said that he will report for pre season training at Stamford Bridge in July. However, his future at Chelsea does not look very bright as Carlo Ancelotti, the man who chose to play him sparingly at the San Siro last season, has taken over the reins of the Blues.
Roma could also end up getting Tottenham Hotspur’s Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko. According to reports, German side Stuttgart will make a bid for the former Spartak Moscow star and then loan him out to Roma. The consortium that is expected to take over Roma later this week has close ties with VfB Stuttgart.
Sheva at the Olympic stadium alongside good friend Francesco Totti next season? Keep watching this space to find out.
