Manchester City close in on Barry and Tevez

May 31, 2009

Manchester City, fuelled by Arab billions, are set to launch a massive £42 million raid for Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry. But they face stiff competition on both fronts.

Carlos Tevez has a very complicated contract which runs till 30 June. His owner, Kia Joorabchian has close ties with Manchester City as he helped broker the Robinho and Jo deals from Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow repectively. City are one of the many clubs matching Kia’s £32 million valuation of Tevez and have promised the South American regualr first team football alongwith a massive £150,000 per week pay. The Argentine striker’s representative Kia Joorabchian is set to hold one last meeting with United officials this week as the former West Ham forward’s two-year loan agreement reaches its end.

Gareth Barry has just one year left on his current contract and Villa want to cash in on him to avoid running the risk of losing him on a Bosman at the end of the season. Manchester City are confident to land him for £10 million with wages of £90,000 per week. Their main competitiors are Tottenham;Barry’s favorite club. But they would not be able to match City in the wages offered.

Barcelona to make 40 million pound bid for Fabregas

May 31, 2009

The Mirror has reported that European champions Barcelona are set to test Arsenal with a £40m bid for their captain Cesc Fabregas.

Arsenal signed Fabregas from the Catalan giants when he was a youngster for just £750,000.

Should they agree to sell him for £40m, the Gunners will reap massive returns.  Do the maths yourself-

£40m-£0.75m/£0.75m *100 is your return on Fabregas in pure transfer fee terms.  Isn’t that figure staggering?

Whether to sell Fabregas or not will be a tough decision for Wenger to take. The captain still has his best years ahead of him, and he is, in the eyes of many people, one of the people Wenger must retain if Arsenal are to get some more silverware in their cabinet.

Fabregas has professed his loyalty to his current employers, but even he will be delighted to get a chance to play alongside Xavi and Iniesta, two of the best midfielders in the world currently.

£40m might test Wenger’s resolve, given that his rumoured transfer kitty this summer is just one fourth of that amount.

Fernando Torres signs new improved Liverpool contract

May 29, 2009

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has put pen to paper a new contract which will see him stay at Anfield till 2013, with the option of extending it for another year.

Torres, who joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in 2007, has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers in the last two seasons, and the fans have taken a great liking to him. He has been the only recent striker to do well at Liverpool, when the likes of Robbie Keane, Andriy Voronin, Djibril Cisse, Fernando Morientes and co. failed.

According to reports, Torres is set to earn £110,000 a week at Liverpool. That makes him Liverpool’s second highest paid player after captain Steven Gerrard, who reportedly takes home something around £120,000 a week.

Torres has already scored 50 goals for the Reds, and will spearhead their attack as they aim to bring the Premier League title to Anfield next season.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez said, “Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better.”

Torres is the fourth Liverpool player to commit his future to the club as Benitez looks to build upon his success of last season. Dirk Kuyt, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Agger are the other three players to have penned new deals at Anfield.

Ireland pens new five year deal with Manchester City

May 28, 2009

Manchester City’s player of the year, Steven Ireland, has put all doubts over his future to rest by agreeing a 5 year deal with Manchester City. Ireland’s form in the Premier League saw him emerge as City’s most consistent player and his approach play and link-up with Robinho earned him many accolades. Ireland scored 12 goals for City, and was City’s second highest goal scorer behind Robinho.

Other Premier League clubs including Arsenal were keeping a keen eye on the Ireland situation. Talks with Ireland had stalled a few days ago, when it emerged that Ireland was not happy with the terms offered. But Manchester City made an improved offer which was signed on by the Republic of Ireland midfielder.

Commenting on Stephen’s new deal, City Manager Mark Hughes said, “Stephen’s new contract is great news for everyone concerned. He was outstanding all last season and is now one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. He thoroughly deserves all the praise that has gone his way after the hard work that he undertook last summer, and I know that he is already aiming to do even better for us next season and beyond”.

City are readying themselves for a very busy summer. One of City’s targets is believed to be Carlos Tevez. City are one of the five clubs who have agreed the valuation for the South American superstar. But City are set to lose Daniel Sturridge on a free, after he refused to sign an improved deal with City.

Aston Villa look towards Owen

May 27, 2009

In all probability, Michael Owen played his last game for Newcastle United when he came off the bench at Villa Park for the last 20 minutes, in a game that confirmed Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship. With Newcastle looking to shed down their wage bill, Michael Owen will have to look for a better club. Aston Villa have emerged as front runners to sign the injury plagued England striker. Aston Villa have made some shrewd business in the past by signing promising English players at a bargain price. Their interest in Owen does not come as a surprise.

Central defender Curtis Davies said: “I am sure Michael Owen doesn’t need revitalising by any manager. I am sure Michael Owen, if he goes somewhere, keeps fit and plays games, is going to score goals.”

In some other good news for Villa, Stiliyan Petrov put pen to paper on a new deal which sees him at the club till the 2012-13 campaign. The deal to keep current captain Gareth Barry still hangs in the balance. Manchester City and Liverpool are linked with a £12 million swoop for the England midfielder. Villa are also on the lookout for a central defender after Martin Laursen decided to quit football after a spate of horrible knee injuries.

Hangeland to Arsenal as Fulham hunt for Brunt

May 26, 2009

Giant Norwegian defender Brede Hangeland has been pivotal in Fulham’s seventh placed finish in the Barclays Premier League. But it does seem that he will be moving on to play for a bigger club in the coming season. Arsene Wenger has expressed interest in signing the tall defender. With Arsenal wanting to shore up their defence before the new season, s successful Premier League defender like Hangeland exactly fits the bill. Wenger is to offer up to £8 million pounds for his services. Fulham have offered Hangeland an improved contract in a bid to persuade him to stay at Craven Cottage but are resigned to him leaving if Arsenal come calling.

‘We’ll do everything in our power to keep Brede,’ said Hodgson. ‘Everyone knows he’s a player that we love. He’s still contracted to us and we want to keep him.

‘We’re doing everything in our power - but our power sometimes can’t be compared to the power of other clubs.’

Fulham are also ready to make a cheeky £4.5 million bid for West Brom winger Chris Brunt. Brunt was mighty impressive for the Baggies in the latter part of the season and would relish an opportunity to play in the Premier League after Wes Brom got relegated to the Championship. Fulham face competition from Scottish champions Rangers who also seem to be interested in the promising winger.

Chelsea gatecrash Inter’s bid for Arnautovic

May 25, 2009

Chelsea have reportedly hijacked Inter Milan’s bid for Marko Arnautovic by offering FC Twente £12m for their highly rated Austrian winger. Italian champions Inter Milan had earlier offered Twente £10m for Arnautovic, but the Nerazzurri were asked by Twente p[resident Joop Munsterman to come back with a better offer.

Arnautovic has been a revelation in this season’s Eredivisie and helped Twente to secure the runners up spot behind AZ Alkmaar.

Many clubs have shown interest in Arnautovic. Chelsea’s London rivals Fulham were one of them, but the Cottagers seem to have dropped out of the race after looking at the other clubs in the fray. Genoa, Manchester United and AS Roma are the among the other clubs keeping tabs on Arnautovic’s progress.

Inter are looking at Arnautovic as a replacement for Argentine striker Hernan Crespo.

Arnautovic has already spoken of his desire to join a club ” who will go a long way in next season’s Champions League”. With the success that English clubs have enjoyed in Europe’s premier club competition, it seems the young Austrian will be heading north to Stamford Bridge very soon.
